Shakhtar Donetsk striker Olanrewaju Kayode has been suspended for three games following his expulsion from Friday’s Ukrainian Premier League encounter against Desna.

The 25-year-old was only making his first start of the season after recovering from the injury that kept him away from the opening stages of the 2018-19 campaign.

In the 64th minute, and with the scores goalless, the former Girona attacker was ball-chasing with Desna’s Maxym Imerekov on the left wing, unbalanced the defender before stamping his thigh, and was subsequently shown a straight red.

The Ukrainian champions, however, went ahead to win the courtesy of a late goal from Maycon to help them maintain their lead at the summit of the league table.

Meanwhile, the Control and Disciplinary Committee of the Football Federation of Ukraine issued a decision on disqualifications for players who have been guilty in the 12th round of the Premier League, and the Nigeria international has been hit with a three-game ban.

This will see Kayode miss his side’s games against Arsenal Kyiv, Olimpik Donetsk [Ukrainian Cup] and the derby against Dynamo Kyiv.

This comes as a huge setback for the striker who has only become a backup to  Junior Moraes after injury halted his progress in Ukraine.

He has played five times across all competitions, including as a substitute in their Uefa Champions League clash against Hoffenheim.

Incidentally, he is set to return ahead of his side’s Champions League second-leg outing against his former employers, Manchester City on November 7.
