The Montreal Impact announced Thursday the signing of Samuel Piette from Spanish club CD Izarra.

It wasn't an unexpected move; the Impact had been teasing Piette's acquisition on social media prior to the official announcement.

A 22-year-old Canadian international, Piette joins Montreal after several years in Europe. He first crossed the Atlantic in 2009 to join the FC Metz academy in France, before moving to the Fortuna Dusseldorf system in 2012. Piette has also played with three clubs in Spain, but now the Montreal-area native gets a chance to ply his trade at home for the first time in his professional career.

“I am very happy to join the Impact, the club of my heart, and to have the chance to play in front of my family, friends and our supporters,” Piette said in an Impact release. “I can’t wait to wear the bleu-blanc-noir jersey and I am looking forward to helping the team reach its objectives.”

Piette is a veteran of Canada's national team, having debuted under former head coach Stephen Hart in 2012 as a 17-year-old. He has made 35 total appearances for the Canada, most recently having played in July during  the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
