Kylian Mbappe converted a stoppage-time penalty to spare Paris Saint-Germain's blushes as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in Group F of the Champions League at Parc des Princes.
For the majority of the match, Newcastle were ahead on the scoresheet, Alexander Isak converting from close range in the 24th minute. The Swedish striker was on hand to finish from just six yards out after PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma spilt a shot from Miguel Almiron after clever build-up from full back Tino Livramento.
Eddie Howe's side frustrated their hosts for much of the contest as PSG squandered a number of clear-cut chances in front of a packed-out home crowd who provided a hostile atmosphere.
Then came the controversy as Ousmane Dembele played a ball into the box that originally hit Livramento in the side before subsequently making contact with his hand from very close range. VAR advised referee Szymon Marciniak to take a look at the incident and to the surprise of most supporters both in the ground and at home, he pointed to the spot.
Mbappe stepped up and made no mistake to salvage a point for the Ligue 1 leaders who now hold the advantage in Group F and remain in second spot. Newcastle also still have the chance of progression on matchday six but they'll be bitterly disappointed not to be taking all three points home with them to Tyneside.

UEFA's handball rules thrown into the spotlight again
It's safe to say that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and his players will feel sick when looking back at the decision that was made to give PSG a 97th-minute penalty.
After the ball clattered into Livramento's side from a few yards away before then hitting his arm, referee Szymon Marciniak was advised to look at the incident by VAR. The Polish official then viewed the action in slow motion just a few times before awarding the penalty, much to the dismay of Newcastle supporters and other football fans watching.
Speaking to TNT Sports in the aftermath, Howe stated: "I'm still coming to terms with it, to be honest. I feel really flat." He added: "I didn't think it was a penalty at all."
That's an understandable response to say the least as UEFA's handball rules will again be the centre of discussions over the coming days.

Livramento and Miley shine for the Magpies in Paris
With a plethora of injuries to deal with, Howe showed plenty of faith to keep 17-year-old Lewis Miley in his starting XI and Livramento at left-back and not in his usual position.
But his calculated gamble paid off as the young English duo both put in mammoth performances to ensure that the visitors would still have the chance to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages on the final matchday even despite PSG’s late equaliser.
Miley — who missed school to play at the Parc des Princes — didn’t look out of place at any point as his energetic performance helped the visitors to claim a point on the road. Livramento also shone as his stunning run helped to set up Isak's opener, and even though he conceded a late penalty, that can't be held against the 21-year-old, who continues to make a name for himself following his summer move from Southampton.

FULL TIME: PSG 1-1 Newcastle United
A simply breathtaking match comes to an end as PSG and Newcastle share the spoils. The Magpies led midway through the first half from an Isak finish but Mbappe converted a last minute penalty in extremely controversial circumstances. Newcastle can still qualify on matchday six.
97th minute: MBAPPE CONVERTS!!! The PSG captain make son mistake from the spot and the French side are level. It's absolute heartbreak for Newcastle.

Kylian Mbappé brings the Parisians level from the spot in the 98th minute...#UCL pic.twitter.com/dmPQfnSM9P
96th minute: The referee goes to the screen to look at the incident and after a few looks, the penalty is given!! The replays show that the ball bounced off of Livramento's chest and it hit his arm but that is never a penalty.
Mbappe steps up.
95th minute: PSG may have recorded 30 attempted shots here but Newcastle are holding firm. There's just two minutes left to play as there's another huge call for a PSG penalty.
91st minute: WHAT A MISS!! The ball is drifted to the back post but Barcola smashes his volley miles over the crossbar and that's another huge let off for the away side.
90th minute: There will be a minimum of eight minutes of added time played here in Paris. Can Newcastle survive?
87th minute: SO CLOSE!! Mbappe bullies his defender before smashing a shot straight at Pope. The ball then falls back to him and he unleashes another powerful strike which misses the far corner by inches. That is agonisingly close for the French striker. Almiron is booked for time wasting just after.
85th minute: With little time left to salvage the situation, Luis Enrique sacrifices centre back Danilo for striker Ramos. It's now or never for PSG.
82nd minute: Another massive chance goes begging for PSG as Hernandez fizzes in a cross to the near post but Dembele puts wide from close range. Asensio replaces Lee for the hosts soon after.
80th minute: Hakimi blazes over from distance and that'll be another minute wasted for Newcastle. Asensio looks set to come on for PSG next.
79th minute: A reminder that as it stands in Group F, Dortmund will qualify for the knockout stages tonight, whilst Newcastle will jump above PSG and into second spot.
76th minute: Ruiz tries to feed Mbappe behind the Newcastle backline but Pope is quick off his line to collect. PSG are running out of time here.
73rd minute: I have no idea how Barcola wasn't in the starting XI for PSG tonight as he's causing chaos down the left flank. His movement produces another huge penalty shout from the home side but it's not given again. Donnarumma is booked for his appeals.
71st minute: Adeyemi puts Dortmund 3-1 up in Milan and if this result in France stays the same, the German side will progress from Group F.
69th minute: There's a huge penalty shout from PSG as Gordon looks like he's taken down Hakimi in the box. Not given initially but VAR will check... not given again. A sigh of relief from Eddie Howe on the bench.
67th minute: WOOOOOW!! WHAT A SAVE!! Pope saves Newcastle!! Mbappe goes past his man before finding Barcola who's six yards out from goal. He hits it first time but the Newcastle shot stopper sticks a big right hand out and diverts it past the far post. The save of his career?
WOW. NICK POPE AGAIN!!!!
— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) November 28, 2023
66th minute: Barcola has arguably done more in his first five minutes on the pitch than Kolo Muani managed in his 60 minute cameo. The youngster is hugging the left wing and causing Trippier some trouble as Mbappe has moved to play down the middle.
62nd minute: Here come the first changes for PSG as Vitinha and Barcola come on for Ugarte and Kolo Muani.
In San Siro, Dortmund retake the lead against Milan as Bynoe-Gittens finds the back of the net.
60th minute: Skriniar also goes into the referees book just a minute later as he brings down Gordon who was flying down the left wing. PSG are losing their cool a bit here now.
59th minute: Dembele is booked and he'll miss PSG's final match versus Dortmund as a result.
58th minute: BIG CHANCE FOR PSG!! Kolo Muani feeds Demeble who stabs an effort at goal from very close range, but Pope is out quickly to deny him again. Mbappe then goes for the spectacular in the follow up but he royally messes up an attempted overhead kick and Newcastle clear the danger.
55th minute: No chances to mention of in this second half so far as Newcastle remain defiant in defence. The visitors are giving PSG nothing here with their structured and disciplined defensive display.
52nd minute: It's not exactly been a quick start for PSG in this second 45 and Mbappe remains quiet for now. Trippier is doing really well to deal with him again, just like he did at St James' Park in early October.
47th minute: Isak has to shoot there! Gordon plays through the striker but instead of striking at goal, he lets Danilo get back alongside him and thwarts his chance.
KICK OFF: Newcastle gets us back underway in this second half. It's going to be tough for the away side to keep hold of this lead, especially with limited options on the bench.
⏱️ More of the same, lads!

HALF TIME: PSG 0-1 Newcastle United
Schar produces a huge block from point blank range and Newcastle just about take their lead into half time. Although the French side came out of the traps quickly at Parc des Princes this evening, Isak netted from close range as Donnarumma spilt an Almiron shot straight to the Swedish striker.
Expect plenty more drama in the second half as PSG look to get back into this one.
45th minute: Ruiz strikes from distance but Pope collects the attempted shot on target with ease. There'll be three minutes of added time in this first half.
43rd minute: Eddie Howe will be desperate to see his side get into the half time break with the lead here and in truth, they look comfortable right now. Isak nearly plays through Gordon on goal but Skriniar does well to intercept.
40th minute: As it stands across the group, Dortmund top the standings from Newcastle then PSG and Milan. If these two results stay the same, any side can still qualify on the final matchday..
36th minute: Ugarte is the second player into the referee's book tonight as he cynically brings down Almiron who was looking to break down the right.
Milan have equalised against Dortmund at San Siro in the other Group F match.
33rd minute: Pope denies Dembele who's shot from just inside the penalty area wasn't the best of his career but needed dealing with anyway. PSG are beginning to respond here.
31st minute: Here's how Isak gave the Magpies a famous lead away to PSG.

What a crucial goal that could prove to be for Newcastle...#UCL pic.twitter.com/K7Q2Rl2Eq4
*Highlights available for UK viewers.
28th minute: Ugarte fires over for PSG who certainly look rattled after that Newcastle opener which has currently put the English side into second spot in the group. Enrique does not look a happy man on the sidelines..
25th minute: GOOOOAAAALLLLL!!! NEWCASTLE LEAD IN PARIS!!! Isak makes amends for his big miss early in this match. Donnarumma can't handle Almiron's shot and spills it straight to Newcastle's star striker who makes no mistake from close range.
Livramento took on about five defenders to find his winner in the build-up too which shouldn't go unmentioned!
ISAAAAKKKKKKK!!! pic.twitter.com/U1dDwJKHTH
— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) November 28, 2023
24th minute: PSG are struggling to create much opportunity all of a sudden. Newcastle have really settled into their gameplan and are making it extremely difficult for the hosts.
Joelinton goes into the book for dragging back Hernandez who was trying to break through midfield.
20th minute: What a match Miley is already having out there for Newcastle. It's his first start in the Champions League tonight and the 17-year-old doesn't look out of place at all so far.
17th minute: Newcastle have definitely grown into this match after struggling in the early exchanges. They've kept the possession for the last few minutes and are looking to control the pace in midfield.
12th minute: WHAT A MISS!! Almiron absolute robs his man before laying it on a plate for Isak but the Swedish striker hammers his effort just over the bar. That's a massive moment that has gone begging for Newcastle. What a game we have on our hands here!
10th minute: BIG SAVE!! What a huge save that is from Pope for Newcastle. Hakimi feeds Mbappe in the box and the French star looks to flick home with a stylish effort, but the away keeper closes his legs quickly to deny him.
In the other match, Dortmund lead through Reus from the penalty spot after Giroud just missed one at the other end..
8th minute: In the other match, Milan have already missed a penalty as Giroud sees his effort saved. That could have huge repercussions in Group F!
5th minute: CLOSE! Dembele delivers to the back post for Lee but the midfielder scuffs his volley at goal. The ball then bounces inside the box and falls to Ruiz, but he smashes over from close range. That's a big chance for PSG.
3rd minute: It's a quick start from PSG as Lascelles is forced into an early clearance for the visitors. The hosts have held all the possession so far.
KICK OFF: We're underway here as Lee gets this game underway. This is such a crucial fixture for both sides but who can make the breakthrough first?
15 mins to KO: It's a bitterly cold night in Paris, but this match should warm up the fans in attendance. The action will be coming up very shortly now.
30 mins to KO: Kieran Trippier will have his work cut out tonight as he faces Kylian Mbappe down the left flank. The French star has scored twice across four Champions League matches this campaign, with both of those goals coming on home soil and he'll fancy adding to that total in this clash.
With another strike to his name here, he'd move on to 43 goals in the competition, the same tally as former teammate Neymar but in 15 fewer matches!
55 mins to KO: As for Newcastle, they arrive here with numerous injuries to deal with but are unchanged from their win over Chelsea at the weekend. It's tops off a great week in particular for youngster Lewis Miley, who continues his run in the starting XI and will face some of the best in the business at Parc des Princes tonight.
Eddie Howe will hope that this side can get the job done given that there's very little experience to draw from on the visitors' bench tonight.

1 hour to KO: The line ups are in and there's a couple of changes for PSG as Danilo comes in at centre back, with Hernandez moving to left back at the expense of Mukiele. Vitinha and Ramos also drop out for Lee Kang-in and Kolo Muani respectively, with Mbappe captaining the home side.

1 hour 30 mins to KO: With so much still left to play for in UCL Group F, here's all the permutations you need to know ahead of tonight's showdown in Paris:
Borussia Dortmund are surprise group leaders but can confirm a spot in the Round of 16 if they beat AC Milan at San Siro in their next game. If that happens and Paris Saint-Germain beat Newcastle United at home, Dortmund and the French champions will go through together.
Time is running out for Eddie Howe's side on their return to the Champions League as a result. They need a result in Paris and will then need to back themselves to beat Milan on the final matchday, but if they lose at the Parc des Princes, they're out, it's as simple as that. Milan likely need a win over Dortmund to keep their hopes alive.
2 hours to KO: Welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Newcastle United's Champions League trip to defending French champions PSG. Eddie Howe's side embarrassed Kylian Mbappe and company in early October in a 4-1 win at St James' Park, but with injuries stacking up, this away outing could prove an almighty test for the Magpies.
Let's do this. 👊

PSG vs Newcastle lineups, team news
PSG could stick with an unchanged team from their impressive 5-2 weekend Ligue 1 win over rivals Monaco. Warren Zaire-Emery and Marquinhos are both missing for the hosts, but talisman Kylian Mbappe – already on 16 goals across all competitions this season – is available.
Luis Enrique has tweaked his team in between Ligue 1 and Champions League games before, but he looks settled on his line up, with Ousmane Dembele scoring his first goal for the club against Monaco in a performance that will almost certainly keep him in the side.
Newcastle's injury situation means Howe could also be forced to stick with the same team that sealed a morale-boosting 4-1 Premier League win over Chelsea. With Sean Longstaff struggling to recover in time, 17-year-old Lewis Miley could retain his starting spot in midfield, alongside Brazilian pair Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
Howe's options are heavily restricted by injuries ahead of this game but their performance against Chelsea will have given him confidence over his starting team. Lewis Hall is back in contention after being ineligible to face parent club Chelsea, but he is also struggling with a minor knock.
Below are the projected starting lineups for both teams ahead of their Champions League match at the Parc des Princes on November 28.
PSG (4-3-3): Donnarumma (GK) — Hakimi, Skriniar, Danilo, Hernandez — Ruiz, Ugarte, Lee — Dembele, Kolo Muani, Mbappe
Subs: Letellier, Tenas, Gonçalo Ramos, Asensio, Vitinha, Mukiele, Soler, Barcola.
- Injured: Zaire-Emery, Marquinhos, Navas, Kimpembe, Mendes.
- Suspended: None
Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento — Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton — Almiron, Isak, Gordon
Subs: Dubravka, Karius, Dummett, Hall, Ndiweni, Huntley, Parkinson.
- Injured: Murphy, Burn, Wilson, Anderson, Botman, Barnes, Willock, Manquillo, Targett, Longstaff (doubtful), Kraft (doubtful).
- Suspended: Tonali
