The 2022/23 Premier League relegation battle is set to be one of the tightest in years with four teams seeking to avoid the trap door down to the second-tier Championship.

Southampton became the first team to suffer relegation with two matches remaining in the season. A 2-0 home loss to Fulham condemned the Saints to the second-tier for the first time since they suffered relegation in 2004/05.

Managerial changes have been a common theme for those battling to stay in the Premier League, with Nottingham Forest's Steve Cooper being the only exception.

Sam Allardyce's Premier League return at Leeds was the most recent change, with the veteran boss tasked with rescuing the Whites as they battle it out with Leicester City, and Everton going into the final match day on May 28.

Premier League relegation scenarios

The Premier League relegation picture will become clearer after Leicester's penultimate match against Newcastle on May 22. Everton clinched a point courtesy of a 99th minute equaliser against Wolves on May 20 to see them go two points clear of the drop with one game left to play and Leeds' defeat to West Ham 24 hours later means at present Everton have their fate in their own hands.

If they beat Bournemouth at home on May 28 they will avoid the drop, providing Leicester don't beat Newcastle.

The first relegation verdict was handed out on May 13 when Southampton went down after a 2-0 home loss to Fulham.

Everton

The point they gained against Wolves in the penultimate fixture could prove decisive come the end of the season. They host Bournemouth on the final day and with Leicester having a better goal difference at present they may need a big win on the final day.

Leicester City

Having failed to get anything from Liverpool last time out, the Foxes now face a daunting trip to take on third-place Newcastle. A final day home match against West Ham will likely be decisive for the Foxes, but they do have the best goal difference of the relegation lot.

Leeds United

Allardyce and Leeds are still stuck in the drop zone after a 3-1 defeat to West Ham last time out.

They host Tottenham on the final day and need to win and hope other results go their way to stand any chance of staying up.
