Poland vs. Portugal lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news: Ronaldo to continue Nations League dominance image

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal hope to continue their strong start to another UEFA Nations League campaign as they travel to meet Poland in Warsaw on Saturday.

After finishing just a point shy of reaching the final four in the previous iteration of the competition, they are a perfect two-for-two in the 2024/25 edition with wins over Croatia and Poland. Cristiano Ronaldo's two goals, meanwhile, have him tied for first with five other players for the League A lead.

Poland have picked up a win over Scotland on the road while falling to Croatia, and now get to contest their first on home soil.

Poland vs. Portugal lineups, predicted starting 11, team news

Poland team news

While goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has come out of club retirement to play for Barcelona as an injury replacement, he is still retired from the national team. Bartlomiej Dragowski of Panathinaikos could have been an option to step in, but he has withdrawn from the squad due to injury.

On the injury front, forward Arkadiusz Milik is still recovering from his torn ACL and is not expected back until early 2025. Gaziantep midfielder Kacper Kozlowski will have to wait for his first international cap after picking up an injury that forced him to withdraw.

Poland predicted XI (5-3-2, right to left): Skorupski (GK) — Kaminski, Kiwior, Bednarek, Dawidowicz, Zalewski — Szymanski, Urbanski, Zielinski — Bogusz, Lewandowski.

Full Poland squad:

Goalkeepers: Marcin Bulka, Bartosz Mrozek, Lukasz Skorupski, Kacper Trelowski.
Defenders: Jan Bednarek, Bartosz Bereszynski, Pawel Dawidowicz, Jakub Kiwior, Kamil Piatkowski, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Sebastian Walukiewicz.
Midfielders: Michael Ameyaw, Przemyslw, Frankowski, Jakub Kaminski, Baartosz Kapustka, Jakub Moder, Maxi Oyedele, Jakub Piotrowski, Sebastian Szymanski, Kacper Urbanski, Nicola Zalewski, Piotr Zielinski.
Forwards: Robert Lewandowski, Krzysztof Piatek, Karol Swiderski.

Portugal team news

Veteran defender Pepe has retired in the aftermath of Euro 2024, and is no longer an option at the back. Neither is Goncalo Inacio of Sporting CP who was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a knock.

A pair of surprising omissions from the squad were Raphael Guerrero and Danilo Pereira, who both have over 60 international caps and are experienced players within the Selecao setup. Danilo, 33, has moved to play for a Saudi Pro League club and is understandably being phased out, while Guerrero has only earned sparse playing time since moving to Bayern Munich.

Portugal predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Costa (GK) — Cancelo, A. Silva, Dias, Mendes — B. Silva, Palhinha, Fernandes — Ronaldo, Jota, Leao.

Full Portugal squad:

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, Rui Silva, Ricardo Velho.
Defenders: Tomas Araujo, Joao Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Ruben Dias, Nuno Mendes, Nelson Semedo, Antonio Silva, Renato Veiga.
Midfielders: Samu Costa, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Neves, Ruben Neves, Otavio, Joao Palhinha, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha.
Forwards: Francisco Conceicao, Joao Felix, Diogo Jota, Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo, Francisco Trincao.
