Newcastle United vs. Chelsea result, highlights and analysis as Joe Willock condemns Blues to third consecutive Premier League defeat image

Chelsea suffered a third consecutive Premier League defeat as they went down 1-0 to Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday.

Joe Willock's second-half strike was enough to settle a tight contest of few clear-cut chances and ensure the Magpies will be in the top three by the time the competition resumes in December following the World Cup.

The Sporting News is providing live commentary and highlights from the match below.

Chelsea, who have now lost three league matches in a row, managed only five shots throughout the contest as they laboured against a Magpies side who will be in the top three at Christmas for the first time in 21 years.

Armando Broja's tame effort was Chelsea's only shot on target in the first half as their front three of Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and the Albanian striker offered scant threat from the off.

Gallagher did at least draw a good save from Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal before Willock opened the scoring 67 minutes in, sweeping home from the edge of the box after Miguel Almiron had got away from Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea offered minimal threat of an equaliser despite eight minutes of injury time as they slipped to a fifth league loss of the season that leaves them eight points outside the top four, having played a game less than fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle look here to stay

Along with Arsenal, Newcastle are the only team in the Premier League this season to have lost just one game and they have the join-best defence along with the Gunners, having conceded just 11 goals in 15 games.

They restricted Chelsea to very little attacking joy at St James' Park as they once again showed they can grind out results when necessary against the bigger opponents.

They will be in the top three on Christmas Day for the first time since 2001/02, a season in which they finished fourth. It would take a brave person to bet against them claiming at least a UEFA Europa League spot this term.

What are Chelsea trying to do?

Chelsea have won just two of their past eight games in all competitions and have lost the past three without scoring a goal. They've also kept just once clean sheet in that run of eight matches and have now failed to beat any of the current top seven this term.

Watching Potter's side, it's hard to ascertain exactly what he wants them to be doing. They look neither a possession-based team, a counter-attacking threat, a resolute defence unit nor a creative attacking side.

Injuries and illness, most recently to Raheem Sterling, haven't helped Potter's cause but there has not been too much to admire about their displays in the past month or so. The former Brighton boss will hope the ownership era of Todd Boehly is one that has a little more patience than that of Roman Abramovich.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea commentary, highlights

FT: It finishes 1-0 to Newcastle, who head into the break for the World Cup in third place in the table! What a result for Eddie Howe's side. Chelsea are now on a five-game winless run and have lost three league matches in a row, and Potter is under big pressure even this early in his time at Stamford Bridge.

90+7 mins: This is a strange end to the game. Lascelles is booked despite being an unused sub for intervening with Cucurella's throw-in. The referee then pushes Pulisic away from a confrontation. The final whistle has now gone, but Pulisic and Havertz are still in shoving matches in the Newcastle box. Why didn't Chelsea show this fight in their performance?

90+6 mins: Mendy goes up for a free-kick that doesn't reach him, and Joelinton leads a break on the unguarded Chelsea goal, but Cucurella gets in the way. We then have a passage of play of two or three heavy challenges, one of which has earned Longstaff a booking. The Blues have a few seconds left to find something...

90 mins: We'll have a minimum of seven extra minutes here, but to be frank, Chelsea could have another 70 and not score if they carry on like this.

85 mins: Botman's going off here a little gingerly, having delivered another excellent performance. Matt Targett is on in his stead. Chelsea have five minutes plus injury time to find some inspiration.

80 mins: Nervy moment there for Pope! Some nice passing from Chelsea gives Cucurella some room on the left, but Havertz just can't get enough on his low cross, with Pope unsure whether to come or stay.

73 mins: Potter responds with a triple change: Broja, Hall and Mount are off for Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Marc Cucurella.

67 mins: GOAL! Newcastle lead! Almiron races down the right, having just about stayed onside. He cuts infield under pressure from Koulibaly, takes a heavy touch, and the arriving Willock sweeps the ball into the right-hand corner with a fine first-time strike.

Australia:

65 mins: Good save, Pope! It's the best moment of the match so far. Trippier halts Pulisic's run into the box but Gallagher wins the ball back on the edge of the area. He tries to curl a shot into the right-hand corner but Pope saves one-handed. Silva can't direct his header on target from the corner.

64 mins: The ball falls nicely to Kovacic on the edge of the Newcastle box, but Schar blocks his effort. That was Chelsea's first attempt of this half.

59 mins: Willock sends a teasing ball in from the left, Mendy isn't sure what to do, but Hall calmly clears it behind and Chelsea defend the corner. We've now got another stoppage as Koulibaly needs some treatment after sitting down on the pitch. He's got some heavy taping on his right hamstring and it looked like he tweaked something in that last passage of play, but he's back on his feet.

55 mins: Newcastle's high press is causing big problems for the visitors at the moment, particularly when the ball is forced back to Mendy. Pulisic does really well then to spin away from Trippier near the centre-circle, and the England full-back is booked for bringing him down. Again, though, Chelsea waste possession — Gallagher, with plenty of time on the right, crosses the ball straight out of play for a goal kick.

50 mins: Big chance for Newcastle! The visitors work the ball nicely down the right, Joelinton heads back Trippier's cross, Mendy blocks at the feet of Wood and Kovacic gets in the way of Guimaraes' follow-up! Almiron then hooks in another cross from the right but Longstaff fires over the bar!

46 mins: Well, then — there are attacking changes afoot! Allan Saint-Maximin was warming up with a purpose during the break, and it's hard to think of a more likely player to brighten up a dull match. Christian Pulisic is on for Chelsea, in place of Cesar Azpilicueta.

HT: It's fair to say that half wasn't a classic. Each side can argue they restricted the other to very few chances, but there was little by way of attacking inspiration. It'll be interesting to see who tries something different to change things.

45+1 min: Big, big appeals for handball against Chalobah, who slides in to block a low cross and the ball strikes his trailing arm, which was under his body and on the floor. No penalty given, and that looks the right call. Joelinton nods the corner over, and that's that for this half.

43 mins: A bit of Newcastle pressure ends with Mendy catching a deep cross. There's a bit of a 'it's nearly the World Cup and we don't want to get injured' vibe about the way this game is being played. Unfortunately, that includes the players who won't be in Qatar.

36 mins: Excellent defending from Botman, who glances away Mount's cross before it can drop nicely for Broja. Chelsea's corner comes to nothing. At the other end, Thiago Silva has to flick Longstaff's cross away from danger, and he then berates his teammates for letting Newcastle attack so easily.

31 mins: First booking of the game goes to Jorginho, who stood on Guimaraes' foot to stop a Newcastle counter. We've now got the curious situation of Trippier taking a free-kick from inside his own half, with the Chelsea defensive line only just outside the centre-circle. Unsurprisingly, the flag goes up for an offside once the ball goes forward.

29 mins: Chelsea, starting with a chested one-two between Koulibaly and Hall, break the Newcastle press and launch an attack. Mount finds Hall on the left, he picks out Broja, but his shot on the turn is weak and simple for Pope to stop.

26 mins: Better from Newcastle, as Joelinton keeps the ball in play and almost finds Almiron with a left-foot cross. The hosts are just starting to build some pressure.

21 mins: It's a bit of a battle out there at the moment. Neither side is doing a great deal in possession and the atmosphere is a little flat. We've got two teams cancelling each other out very well.

15 mins: Half a chance there for Premier League player of the month Miguel Almiron, who sends a volley over the bar from just inside the box. Newcastle are giving Chelsea some problems with their high press, although clear-cut openings are yet to arrive.

7 mins: Loftus-Cheek can't continue and Thiago Silva is on to replace him. Jamaal Lascelles is warming up for Newcastle, but Schar is playing on for now.

5 mins: We've got two early injury concerns here: Fabian Schar seemed to take a hefty blow to the back of the head off Broja and looks pretty dazed. Meanwhile, Ruben Loftus-Cheek looks to have tweaked something when playing a simple pass forward for Chelsea. Both look like they may have to come off.

KO: And we're off! The game gets underway after a powerful minute's silence to mark November 11.

10 mins to KO: This is how the Premier League top eight looks ahead of this game. A win for either side could do wonders for confidence before the break for the World Cup...

8. Chelsea 13 6 3 4 17 16 1 21

35 mins to KO: Raheem Sterling is missing entirely for Chelsea today due to illness, and there's a distinct lack of obvious pace to the Blues' attack. What they do have with Broja is extra physical strength to deal with an imposing Newcastle defence.

TEAM NEWS:

Eddie Howe makes two changes from the win over Southampton last week, and it includes dropping Callum Wilson to the bench! Chris Wood gets the nod in attack, while Joelinton comes in for Jacob Murphy.

For Chelsea, Lewis Hall makes his full Premier League debut after impressing in the Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City, while Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount and Armando Broja lead the attack.

2 hrs 15 mins before KO: Today could be a chance for Callum Wilson to prove why Gareth Southgate was correct to call him up to the England squad instead of Brentford's two-goal hero Toney. The striker has four goals in six league games since returning from injury last month and he'll be eager to add to that tally.

2 hrs 30 mins before KO: The last matchday of the season before Qatar 2022 started with a shock as Ivan Toney scored twice to give Brentford a 2-1 win at Manchester City. That result means Arsenal are guaranteed to be top of the table at Christmas; it also means Newcastle could move to within two points of the champions in the table (albeit having played a game more) if they can beat Chelsea.

3 hrs before KO: The final weekend of Premier League fixtures before the World Cup sees a potentially key game in the top-four battle: it's Newcastle United, flying high under Eddie Howe, against Graham Potter's underperforming Chelsea.

Newcastle vs Chelsea betting odds, prediction

The sportsbooks are finding it difficult to split these two, and that's no great surprise. Chelsea might be struggling for top form at the moment, but the quality within Potter's squad means they are rarely odds-on to lose a match.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have become remarkably hard to beat under Howe and have already taken four points from away games against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Prediction: Newcastle have the best defensive record in the league this season, along with Arsenal, and Chelsea have scored the fewest goals of any of the top-nine teams in the table. A low-scoring draw feels likely in this one — and, indeed, backing a draw would yield the best returns. We'll go for 1-1.
