Newcastle United vs Chelsea score, result, highlights as 10-man Blues crumble under second-half pressure image

Newcastle United and Chelsea had gone punch-for-punch across the first 60 minutes of an entertaining affair at St. James' Park. Everything one team had produced, the other side had matched. Alexander Isak and Raheem Sterling cancelled each other out in the first half, and the second stanza was set up beautifully for an entertaining finish.

Then the Blues switched off and Newcastle pounced, as they have done so many times at a home ground that has become a formidable place for opponents. Defensive mistakes by Chelsea led to a quickfire double from Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton on the hour mark, and Newcastle ran away as 4-1 winners in a huge matchup between teams looking to climb back into the top third of the Premier League table.

Discipline was an enormous issue for Chelsea on the day, as they picked up a host of needless yellow cards from referee Simon Hooper. The most glaring was a pair of utterly brainless bookings to captain Reece James, who found himself with an early shower, leaving Chelsea with a man disadvantage at 3-1 down to render their comeback bid nearly impossible.

Marc Cucurella had a miserable match, largely responsible for each of Newcastle's first two goals before picking up a yellow card for dissent that left him suspended for Chelsea's next league matchup.

For Newcastle, it's a delightful day all told, jumping into sixth in the Premier League standings, two points back of Aston Villa who are yet to play this weekend. Chelsea sink deeper into the mid-table doldrums, sitting 10th and potentially falling as far as 13th by the end of the matchweek.

The Sporting News followed the Newcastle United vs. Chelsea match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea live updates, highlights, commentary

FULLTIME: Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea

One team remained poised when it mattered most, and one team faltered spectacularly. What seemed like a dead-even affair through the first hour finishes completely lopsided as Newcastle run away as home winners.

Chelsea were awful when the pressure ramped up, and Newcastle punished them with precision and venom. It's a wonderful result for the hosts amidst an injury crisis, while Mauricio Pochettino will have lots of work to do to pick this Blues side back up.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea: Second Half

90+2 min: Matt Ritchie is shown a yellow card for hacking Mykhaylo Mudryk and then blocking the quick free kick. The Ukrainian is very unhappy, and the two come together, but they're broken up before it heats up further.

Anthony Gordon and Lewis Miley are withdrawn for the final few minutes, as two more debutants enter for Newcastle in Diallo and Ndiweni.

86th min: With the game wrapped up, Eddie Howe makes a pair of changes. Jamal Lascelles and Miguel Almiron are withdrawn in favour of Paul Dummett and debutant Alex Murphy.

Raheem Sterling is withdrawn by Chelsea after a positive performance, while Noni Madeuke enters in his place.

84th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! Anthony Gordon puts the cherry on top for Newcastle at home! Chelsea have crumbled to pieces! It's a great solo goal, fed in by Miguel Almiron down the left, who cuts inside on Benoit Badiashile and finds the tiniest window past both the defender and goalkeeper, tucking the ball inside the far post.

No way back for the Blues now, who are three goals and a man down. They were right in this after an hour but totally fell apart!

80th min: Yet another yellow card for Chelsea, as substitute Levi Colwill is booked for a late foul on the touchline. Alexander Isak is withdrawn by Eddie Howe, given a boisterous applause by the home fans.

76th min: Chance, Newcastle! The hosts are pouring on the pressure, as Bruno Guimaraes has a pair of sloppy efforts blocked. Newcastle come right back at the Chelsea defense, and Fabian Schar drives one towards the lower left-hand corner which requires an exceptional save from Robert Sanchez to keep it out!

As it again comes back at Chelsea, Marc Cucurella is booked, which triggers an accumulation suspension for the next match, coming against his former club Brighton. It looks like his booking wasn't for the foul he conceded atop the left corner of the penalty area, but instead for dissent in the aftermath. The Blues' discipline in this match has been horrific.

73rd min: RED CARD! CHELSEA! Reece James has been sent off! It's brainless from the Chelsea captain! His first yellow was foolish, having booted the ball away, and then here he pulled Anthony Gordon back for a professional foul! It almost appeared as if he forgot he was already on a booking, as the foul seemed like something he would normally do to stop a counter and absorb a yellow card.

In response, Chelsea bring Levi Colwill on to replace Cole Palmer. The way back becomes even more difficult.

68th min: The first changes of the match come from Chelsea, who are now trailing by a pair. Armando Broja, Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Moises Caicedo are coming on, while Lesley Ugochukwu, Conor Gallagher, and Nicolas Jackson exit. Wholesale changes as the suspended Mauricio Pochettino looks on from the stands.

61st min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! The hosts have two in two minutes and Chelsea are stunned! It's an awful mistake from Thiago Silva, who completely whiffs on a back-pass, and Joelinton snatches the ball and finishes with fury!

Chelsea's Brazilian veteran is the last man you'd expect that from, but credit Newcastle for taking advantage!

Watch in USA:

60th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! Jamaal Lascelles puts the hosts back in front with a wonderful header! Not direct from the free-kick, but Newcastle strike quickly from the dead ball, cycling the ball around the the far side of the pitch, and Lascalles makes a run right through the middle past Marc Cucurella to meet the deep delivery with a header.

59th min: Now Raheem Sterling is booked for also delaying a restart of possession after he commits a foul in midfield. Another needless and avoidable yellow card.

55th min: Conor Gallagher is seemingly booked for a tackle on Joelinton, but it's actually Reece James who earned the yellow for booting the ball away in the aftermath.

54th min: Chelsea now have a spell of pressure up front, as Raheem Sterling continues to pull the strings. He goes down in the penalty area wanting a penalty, but it's a good tackle from Jamal Lascelles to dispossess the Chelsea playmaker.

51st min: Kieran Trippier causes some trouble with a trio of successive Newcastle corners, the first seeing Robert Sanchez go flailing to the ground.

The game is gaining a bit of needle as sets of players from both teams screaming for referee decisions. Chelsea under a good deal of pressure right now.

46th min: Straight off the restart, Jamal Lascelles gives the ball away in his own defensive third, and then smacks Nicolas Jackson in the face as Chelsea look to take advantage, earning a yellow card. Raheem Sterling looks to have another free-kick chance from atop the penalty area, but he sends this one over the crossbar.

Kickoff: The second half is under way, with neutrals surely hoping the two sides can pick up where they left off from that thrilling first 45 minutes. Newcastle's only shot on target was Alexander Isak's goal, but they've had a few other big chances go begging. Chelsea, meanwhile, played largely on the counter and looked dangerous in doing so.

Players on first-half yellow cards who will have to be careful with their discipline are Joelinton and Kieran Trippier for Newcastle, plus Lesley Ugochukwu for Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino may consider protecting his young midfielder once the match passes the hour mark.

HALFTIME: Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea

What an entertaining first half at St. James’ Park! Alexander Isak and Raheem Sterling have the goals, which cancelled out both on the scoresheet and in beauty.

Then both sides traded awful misses, as Joelinton put his point-blank header wide and Conor Gallagher failed to punish Nick Pope for a bad mistake in possession. Pope’s exceptional save on Enzo Fernandez’s blast is the difference in the game, while Robert Sanchez nearly made a great save himself on Kieran Trippier’s free-kick off the crossbar.

Sterling was Chelsea's top performer through those 45 minutes, while young Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon have been very bright for the hosts, who need more from Miguel Almiron. It’s been an exciting, back-and-forth match so far that deserved more goals, and it feels like there will be plenty of opportunities for both sides to snatch the three points after the break.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea: First Half

45+3 min: Joelinton is booked for clotheslining Reece James, a really ugly tackle from the Newcastle midfielder who could have seen more punishment on another day.

James is very unhappy with the challenge, and is further antagonised by the Newcastle bench. The St. James' Park fans are upset with James taking his time over the dead ball, and he's rushed into giving it away on the restart, but a foul from Alexander Isak brings the Newcastle break, the half on the whole, to a close.

41st min: Chance, Newcastle! Chelsea youngster Lesley Ugochukwu is the next to goes into Simon Hooper's book as he's done by Anthony Gordon and has to pull back the Newcastle playmaker.

Kieran Trippier takes the free-kick, and pings it off the crossbar! In fairness, Robert Sanchez was well-positioned to deal with that, and as he dives to protect his top corner, he had his hand right there. Had that been on target, it likely would have been dealt with, and we'd be praising the goalkeeper for a wonderful save.

36th min: Chance, Chelsea! Nick Pope gives the ball right to Conor Gallagher, but the Chelsea midfielder completely flubs the wide-open chance to put the Blues ahead! What a let-off for Pope, who watches as Gallagher dribbles around a scrambling defender but produces a horribly weak shot well wide. What a disappointment!

31st min: Chance, Chelsea! The Blues are looking to bunker and counter, and they produce a delicious transitional play with good side-to-side buildup in the final third. It's cut back to Enzo Fernandez atop the penalty area who charges onto a shot, and it requires a sensational save from Nick Pope to keep it out! He launches himself to the left and gets a hand to tip the shot wide!

On the corner, Benoit Badiashile gets a header on target but Pope impressively holds onto the ball. A pair of quality plays from the Newcastle goalkeeper!

26th min: Chance, Newcastle! Joelinton with a disastrous miss! Kieran Trippier's corner is put on a platter to the far post, and as Robert Sanchez helplessly falls to the ground, the Newcastle midfielder comes flying in and meets the ball with a diving header from point-blank range, but he puts it wide! It looks like he slipped at the final moment, but what an awful finish on a sitter!

23rd min: GOAL! CHELSEA! Almost as soon as play restarts, Chelsea break thanks to a poor moment from Jamal Lascelles, and Kieran Trippier is forced to foul Raheem Sterling in transition with a push in the back. Trippier is booked, and Chelsea have a dangerous free-kick atop the penalty area.

Chelsea have a complicated free-kick setup, but everyone clears out for Raheem Sterling to take, and he buries a looper into the top-left corner! What a finish, as Nick Pope never even saw it, rooted to the spot!

Watch in USA:

20th min: Oh no, Anthony Gordon is down and in a lot of pain. It's a non-contact injury, as he loses his footing while trying to make an off-ball cut back towards his own goal. His left foot goes out from under him, and he's holding his hip.

Gordon looks to get up and run it off, which is positive...but now Joelinton's gone down without play even restarting. What a mess this is for Newcastle at the moment. He's up now, and very demonstrative about...something. They'll both continue for now.

17th min: Newcastle have completely snatched all the momentum of this match, and Chelsea are rattled. Kieran Trippier feeds a free-kick delivery into the box which Marc Cucurella clears, but it comes right back at them and Cucurella does well to block Lewis Miley's powerful drive.

13th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! Alexander Isak has the opener on his return!!! Newcastle rotate the ball side-to-side, throwing Chelsea's organisation off balance. It creates an opening for a very simple vertical through-ball finds Isak totally unmarked just to the right of the penalty spot, and he buries it.

It's an exceptional assist from 17-year-old Lewis Miley who shows exquisite vision. Meanwhile, on the other end, Marc Cucurella completely lost his man on the opener.

Watch in USA:

9th min: Chelsea have had the better start thus far, and Conor Gallagher works room for a shot on his right foot, cutting inside from the left edge of the penalty area and seeking the inside of the far post, but it skitters wide.

4th min: This has been very back-and-forth so far, with both teams looking to carry the ball forward. Neither has been able to manage a shot yet however, with Nicolas Jackson coming closest, but he is dispossessed right at the last possible moment inside the top of the penalty area.

2nd min: There's an interesting wrinkle for Eddie Howe and Newcastle, with the two full-backs playing on opposite sides. Kieran Trippier, a left-back, is on the right matched up against Cole Palmer, while Timo Livramento is on the left defending Raheem Sterling.

Kickoff: The match is under way from St. James' Park! With kickoff, Thiago Silva officially becomes Chelsea's oldest-ever outfield player, passing Dick Spence who has held the club's mark since 1947. Last match he became the fourth-oldest Premier League goal scorer with his contribution in the 4-4 draw with Manchester City.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea: Pre-match commentary, analysis, stats, and more

15 mins to kickoff: The last team to beat Newcastle at home in a Saturday 3 p.m. local time kickoff? Chelsea back in October of 2021. Can they repeat things here? Both these teams need points badly to avoid falling further back of the league's top third.

30 mins to kickoff: With Manchester City and Liverpool drawing in today's early kickoff, the top of the table is less out of reach than it could have been. The top four have beaten up on each other this season, and it has allowed Newcastle and Chelsea to both drop results and still remain within reach of the Champions League places.

They both have work to do in that regard, though, as Newcastle remain five points back of fifth-placed Aston Villa, while Chelsea are nine points clear of that spot.

45 mins to kickoff: Both teams have young replacements in midfield, which will provide an interesting subtext to this match. Lewis Miley made his debut against Bournemouth in the 2-0 defeat, and he lines up alongside 19-year-old Lesley Ugochukwu who has eight Premier League appearances this season but only one start.

1 hour to kickoff: Interesting team news for today's game: Newcastle will go with 17-year-old Lewis Miley in midfield once more, as Sean Longstaff has yet to return from injury. They have Alexander Isak back in attack, too.

Chelsea bring in Lesley Ugochukwu for Moises Caicedo, who returned late from international duty.

1 hour 30 mins to kickoff: It's a cold one today as Chelsea make the journey north from London to Tyneside.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea lineups, team news

Newcastle's lengthy injury list remains a major worry for Howe following the international window, but Bruno Guimaraes is back following a suspension. Fabian Schar was passed fit in time and Alexander Isak is also back in the starting lineup, while teenager Lewis Miley lines up in midfield again.

Lewis Hall is missing as his loan deal makes him ineligible to face parent club Chelsea.

Newcastle lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Pope — Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento — Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton — Almiron, Isak, Gordon.

Newcastle subs: Dubravka, Dummett, Ritchie, Karius, Gillespie, Diallo, Murphy, Ndiweni, Parkinson

Chelsea's own injury issues are showing some signs of improving and Levi Colwill is back on the bench. Lesley Ugochukwu starts in place of Moises Caicedo, who arrived back in England late after international duty.

Chelsea lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Sanchez (GK) — James, Silva, Badiashile, Cucurella — Ugochukwu, Fernandez — Palmer, Gallagher, Sterling — Jackson

Chelsea subs: Disasi, Mudryk, Madueke, Broja, Caicedo, Colwill, Petrovic, Maatsen, Matos
