Manchester United return to competitive action after the World Cup break with a Carabao Cup Round of 16 match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday, December 21.

The Red Devils played and lost two friendlies over the past fortnight to Spanish clubs Cadiz and Real Betis, but did triumph 2-1 over Fulham in their last Premier League game before Qatar 2022.

Erik ten Hag's side are now without Cristiano Ronaldo after his contract was mutually terminated just prior to the World Cup after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan that saw him slam the club on multiple fronts

While Burnley are in the Championship this season, Manchester United can't afford to take them lightly.

With former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany as their new manager, the Clarets have started the 2022/23 season in fine form, losing just two of their first 23 league games.

David de Gea didn't go the World Cup with Spain but Martin Dubravka starts as United'sCarabao Cup keeper.

Manchester United vs Burnley betting odds, prediction

Playing in a division above, Manchester United unsurprisingly come into this match as strong favourites.

But don't let the generous odds fool you, this isn't a sure thing for the Red Devils with Burnley set to test them at both ends.

Unlike United, Burnley have already returned from their World Cup break and are currently on a four-game winning streak that has seen them score 12 goals and concede just twice.

Without a number of World Cup stars, the Clarets could well pull off an upset as Kompany comes back to haunt the Red Devils once again.

Prediction: Burnley to win 2-1
