Manchester United host rivals Manchester City in the 191st Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's reigning Premier League champions are second behind leaders Tottenham, having won seven of their nine top-flight games this season.

United have struggled for top gear under Erik ten Hag and lie eighth, but come into this game on the back of consecutive wins.

Indeed, the Red Devils' faithful will hope Andre Onana's dramatic late penalty save to secure a 1-0 Champions League win over Copenhagen in midweek can give the team much-needed momentum to take into the latest installment of an intense local argument.

  • Moneyline lean: Man City win (-145)
  • Score prediction: Man United 0-2 Man City

Ten Hag's side won the corresponding fixture 2-1 last season and home advantage can certainly play a part again this time.

However, the direction of travel for both teams since that January 2023 fixture feels both clear and significant. United went on to win the Carabao Cup the following month but have struggled for consistent form since.

Given the progress of Ten Hag's first half season at the helm, even allowing for off-field turbulence, the lack of development since has been disappointing.

You could even make a case that there's been a notable regression since United bloodied City's nose. Guardiola's men, of course, recovered to win the treble — matching United's 1999 achievement and beating their neighbours in the FA Cup final for good measure.

Back-to-back defeats to Wolves and Arsenal before the most recent international break demonstrated City are also not quite at full tilt this season but, with Rodri back from suspension, it is tough to see beyond the sort of dominant, controlling performance that have become a hallmark over recent years.

Man United vs Man City best bet

    • Pick: Phil Foden to score and Man City to win the match
    • Odds: +400 (FanDuel)

Despite starting the season in fine form, you could argue Foden has slipped slightly under the radar.

Erling Haaland's goalscoring prowess, despite being short of his very best, continues to dominate the conversation around Manchester City, while Julian Alvarez has been the most obvious player picking up the slack from Kevin De Bruyne's injury by weighing in with regular goals and assists.

However, Foden's role has also been changed by De Bruyne suffering a serious hamstring injury. Even when the England international has been selected on the right wing he has had the license to rove inside and cause damage.

Although Alvarez opened the scoring and Jeremy Doku caught the eye during the first half against Brighton last weekend, Foden was City's most consistent attacker over the course of the contest, with Bernardo Silva nominally playing outside him wide on the right.

He was rested for the midweek Champions League trip to Young Boys and is primed to start at Old Trafford, where he can poke and prod at the injury-hit left-hand side of the home side's defence.

Man United vs Man City flier bet

    • Pick: Marcus Rashford to score and United to win the match
    • Odds: +700 (FanDuel)

If United can upset the odds and uphold the derby day tradition of throwing the form book out of the window, they will need Rashford somewhere close to his best.

That's rarely been the case this season, where the England forward has a solitary goal in 12 club appearances. You could say he's due.

This is a fixture Rashford has enjoyed in the past. He has five goals against City. Of the four that have come in the Premier League, three have helped United to victory.

The most recent of those was the winner in this fixture last season after he was apparently not offside for Bruno Fernandes' equaliser.

Admittedly, Rashford was in the midst of a prolific run of form at that point, but it can often feel tricky to keep the 25-year-old away from the thick of things on derby day.
