OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United lost for the fourth time in seven Premier League games this season as Crystal Palace claimed a 1-0 win on Saturday.

The Red Devils beat the Eagles 3-0 on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup to give themselves a much-needed boost following a difficult run of results that included a home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion that ended their long unbeaten stretch in league play at Old Trafford.

Yet they looked far from the confident team that dispatched Roy Hodgson's men in midweek and, after Joachim Andersen's stunning opening goal silenced Old Trafford, they found it extremely difficult to break down a resilient and organised Palace side who had won just one of their previous five league games.

Mason Mount missed the pick of the chances in the second half, while Sofyan Amrabat hit the crossbar — although the referee seemed to have stopped play by the time he struck his shot — and a couple of handball shouts were waved away despite vociferous appeals.

The result means United are 10th after seven games and it already looks like a title challenge is beyond them once again this season. The pressure is only going to grow on Erik ten Hag from here.

Man United vs Crystal Palace analysis

Red Devils' worst start in 34 years shows few signs of improving

United fans may take solace from the fact Man City were beaten by Wolves, marking the first time in a decade that both teams have lost matches that kicked off at 3 p.m. on the same Saturday.

It's not exactly a big consolation prize.

United have lost consecutive home league games for the first time since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's final weeks in charge in November 2021. That was against Liverpool and Man City, not, with all due respect, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag has overseen four league losses, and five in all competitions, in the first six weeks of 2023/24. This is their worst start to a league season since 1989, when the great Alex Ferguson came perilously close to the sack. There's no indication that Ten Hag's position is under threat, but this was a miserable day for everyone of a United persuasion in the pouring Manchester rain.

Yes, they have been beset by injuries and off-field concerns, and they had won their previous two games without conceding a goal. But the confidence, the vibrancy on display in the EFL Cup against these same opponents was absent here: they monopolised possession but created few clear openings against a disciplined defence that was not exactly stretched to breaking point.

Every time a United player got the ball out wide, faced two Palace shirts in front of him, checked back and recycled possession, it felt like a fitting assessment of the team, and club, as a whole: one step forward, two steps back. And repeat.

A day to remember for Roy Hodgson

Palace might have feared the worst after Tuesday's performance, but this was an excellent defensive display from the Eagles, who shut the game down well once Andersen had scored a goal so unlikely in its brilliance that even he seemed surprised.

The result also means Roy Hodgson is the first opposition manager in history to go five consecutive Premier League games unbeaten at Old Trafford, which is a remarkable feat for the 76-year-old.

"Oh," said Hodgson when told of the stat. "Yeah, I'm happy about that. I'm most pleased for the players."

United's attack is a serious concern

United had their moments in front of goal, but despite boasting 77 per cent of the ball and 19 shots, they hit the target just four times. Their final figure of 1.67 expected goals showed that they could have done better with their finishing, but it was hardly a case of them battering down the door.

Ten Hag has pointed to missed opportunities in previous defeats this season, and there is some truth to that: in their first seven league games, United have scored seven times from 11.6 xG, meaning they should realistically have scored more than four more goals than they have. Only Everton (6.34) and Chelsea (6.61) have a worse such differential.

But United simply don't look like a team capable of scoring plenty, despite the riches they boast in attack (even accounting for absences). Their front line too often looks disconnected, with players unable to combine effectively once they get into an opponent's defensive third.

Their top scorer this season is defensive midfielder Casemiro; when chasing the game today, they brought on Harry Maguire and Donny van de Beek for the final moments. After 90 minutes of uninspiring possession play, it was a desperate tactic that yielded predictable results: Maguire found himself on the left wing with 30 seconds left, but passed the ball against Alejandro Garnacho, and Palace won a throw-in.

Man United vs Crystal Palace lineups, team news

The injuries have continued to pile up for United in recent days with Ten Hag confirming defensive pair Lisandro Martinez and Sergio Reguilon are both set for an period on the sidelines. Reguilon's injury is described as minor, but Martinez has aggravated the foot problem suffered in April and could be out until December.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also missing from his defensive plans, so Sofyan Amrabat looks to be starting right-back again, as he did in the EFL Cup. Jadon Sancho is still not included in the squad, and Antony will not be available until next week, despite returning to training. Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen are available again and on the bench.

Man United lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Amrabat, Varane, Lindelof, Dalot — Mount, Casemiro — Pellistri, Fernandes, Rashford — Hojlund

Subs: Bayindir (GK), Maguire, Martial, Eriksen, Garnacho, Van de Beek, Evans, McTominay, Hannibal

Palace's options are also restricted by injuries, with Hodgson recalling Joel Ward, Marc Guehi, Joachim Anderson and Eberechi Eze after the Carabao Cup loss. Jean-Philippe Mateta starts in place of the injured Odsonne Edouard.

Crystal Palace projected lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Johnstone (GK) — Ward, Guehi, Anderson, Mitchell — Doucoure, Hughes — J. Ayew, Schlupp, Eze — Mateta

Subs: Matthews (GK), Holding, Clyne, Ebiowei, Richards, Riedewald, Rak-Sakyi, Ozoh, Ola-Adebomi
