Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts is set to move to La Liga side Girona on loan, Goal understands.

Roberts, 21, has spent the past two-and-a-half seasons on loan at Celtic, and had received interest from a number of clubs, including Huddersfield Town, in recent weeks.

Roberts rejected a temporary switch to French club Nice last summer in favour of a return to Celtic, but is now ready to try his hand in Spain.

Girona, City’s sister club, had five players on loan from the Blues last season, and will retain defensive midfielder Alexis Garcia for the current campaign.

They could also bring back Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, who failed in a bid to attain a work permit to play for City this season.

Blues boss Pep Guardiola insisted he was ready to use Luiz in his first-team for the current campaign, but the 20-year-old will now be sent on loan.

As revealed by Goal Brazil on Monday, the youngster has several options, including Portuguese side Benfica.

Girona had been keen to take City youngster Brahim Díaz on loan, but the 19-year-old has pushed to stay at the Etihad Stadium for another season, despite increased competition for places following the arrival of Riyad Mahrez this summer.

Brahim’s contract expires next summer and the Spaniard has made it clear that he does not want another loan move, leaving City in a difficult position as they attempt to secure his long-term future.

The Premier League champions do not want to lose one of their most promising young players but believe the opportunity to get regular game time elsewhere this season would be best for his development.

However, it is understood that talks between the two parties have progressed well in recent weeks and a new contract is regarded as a definite possibility.
