ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Bernardo Silva’s deflected first-half brace gave Manchester City a comfortable 2-0 FA Cup quarterfinal win over Newcastle United.

Pep Guardiola’s treble winners were aiming to reach their sixth consecutive semifinal in this competition and their opener came with a slice of fortune when Silva’s shot looped up off Dan Burn and beyond Martin Dubravka.

It was a similar story after the half hour, with the Portugal international’s next effort clipping Sven Botman’s head to take a different trajectory to the Newcastle goalkeeper’s dive.

City threatened to pull further clear as Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden enjoyed being deployed in narrow inside forward positions alongside Erling Haaland, although it required a fabulous close-range save from Stefan Ortega to prevent Alexander Isak from reducing the arrears.

Isak was denied again midway through the second half, this time by some brilliantly composed defending from Manuel Akanji.

By that stage, City had already reverted to managing the contest as a wider part of their packed run-in. Doku, Haaland and Josko Gvardiol all went close during an early second-half rally.

After the Isak let-off, as the Manchester skies opened, City were happy to let Newcastle’s cup hopes trickle away into the gutter via a few hundred well-placed passes.

Man City vs. Newcastle analysis

Doku makes Arsenal case as early season form returns

Since joining City from Rennes for £55.5 million ($71m/€65m) Doku’s fledgling City career can be split into two parts. After a false-start of a debut against Fulham, the Belgium international produced a game-changing turn away at West Ham, equalising after City went into halftime 1-0 down and pulling various strokes from his box of tricks thereafter.

There was also an early assist for Julian Alvarez in a 2-1 win over Brighton, where Doku was the most exciting player on the field. It preceded a little masterpiece against Bournemouth, where he scored a wonderful opener and weighed in with a remarkable four assists in a 6-1 demolition job.

Doku also felt close to unplayable at times during the 1-1 draw against title rivals Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in November, but that was a game where concerns over his end product became louder. He suffered a thigh injury in City’s next contest — a helter-skelter 3-3 draw against Tottenham — and he has struggled to hit the heights since.

The 21-year-old remains without a Premier League goal involvement since the Bournemouth game. Peaks and troughs in form are not uncommon for wide attackers in their first season under Pep Guardiola and persistent injuries to Jack Grealish have not allowed Doku much time out of the firing line.

He looked ripe for a rest after a disappointing showing in the 3-1 derby win over Manchester United two weeks ago, but his response has been impressive. Doku replaced Julian Alvarez during last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Anfield, gave City’s attack shape and purpose and came agonisingly close to an 89th-minute winner when he hit the post.

Restored to the starting line-up on Saturday, he continued to enjoy himself against Newcastle. Only Erling Haaland bettered his four goal attempts, with Silva the only man to match his two on target. He was a persistent threat, as Guardiola pushed his full-backs high and wide, allowing Doku to rove inside. That versatility will serve him well. Although those tactics are unlikely to be used in the crunch title clash against Arsenal, having Doku back on song is a huge boost for City.

What is Man City’s FA Cup record?

City are fourth on the all-time list for FA Cup wins with seven, three of which have come since their 2008 Abu Dhabi takeover. Guardiola is responsible the two most recent successes, last season and in 2018/19. The initial win under the Catalan began a run of of semifinal appearances that now extends to six in a row. The contrast to Newcastle’s run without a major honour since 1955 is considerable.

Guardiola’s side have struggled to convert those semifinal outings into more regular wins in part due to the packed schedule they tend to land themselves in at this time of year. Often coming after the Champions League quarterfinals, the FA Cup semis can be a game too far for City, as in 2022 when a heavily rotated team were blown away early on by Liverpool.

They will head to Wembley on the weekend of April 20 after the second leg of a mouthwatering quarterfinal showdown with Real Madrid in Europe. Last season’s historic treble arguably wouldn’t have come to pass without City having the fortune of drawing Sheffield United in the FA Cup after their exertions against Bayern Munich. With all respect due, they will have their fingers crossed for Coventry City in Sunday’s draw.

Man City vs Newcastle live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: That's a wrap. Save for a couple of Isak chances, that was a tale of total control from City. Silva's goals were both fortunate but it was a thoroughly deserved victory. Also, in the wider context of chasing trophies on three fronts, you occasionally need a game to pass with out incident or palpitations. After their latest Anfield epic last week, City got that today.

90th minute+3: Reader, they have not had the ball.

90th minute: There will be three additional minutes in which for Newcastle to do a madness. They'll need the ball for that, of course.

87th minute: On comes Alvarez for Haaland, for what should be the last knocking. Although, there was all that Wolves vs. Coventry nonsense earlier, so who knows?

84th minute: City's Norwegian partnership doesn't quite click as Bobb dribbles at the Newcastle defence but can't find Haaland.

83rd minute: It is absolutely hosing it down here. City's sky blue kits looking a coupe of shades darker. Botman heading off in Newcastle's final chance. Emil Krafth comes into the defence.

82nd minute: Haaland still really wants a goal. This shot is deflected behind. Those only go in for Bernardo Silva, pal.

80th minute: Rodri is writhing about on the floor in discomfort. Dias helps him to his feet. One to keep an eye on.

77th minute: First change for City. Guardiola might have hoped to have made more by now but is playing it safe at 2-0. Bobb comes on for Doku, who definitely looks like he's returning to his early season form.

71st minute: City have responded to that let-off by more or less keeping the ball for five minutes.

66th minute: Good chance for Newcastle. Almiron running at the defence, now the ball finds Isak. He should do better as Akanji masterfully jockeys him away from the danger area to concede only a corner. City clear their lines.

61st minute: Dubravka does very well to get up and tip a Walker cross away from Haaland. Newcastle making a quadruple substitution. Gordon, Burn, Willock and Longstaff off; Almiron, Hall, Miley and Anderson on. Are you keeping up?

56th minute: City get into a tangle trying to defend Isak. Burn in a promising position. He passes the ball to no one in particular, follows his pass and shoves Walker over. An unedifying couple of moments. Eddie Howe puts his hands to his head.

54th minute: Newcastle don't deal especially convincingly with a corner and Gvardiol, who is still looking for his first City goal, has a volley deflected behind. The next set piece doesn't cause so much trouble.

52nd minute: Excellent play from Kovacic through midfield to find Haaland. The City centre-forward is motoring, tearing towards the box. He fires just wide.

50th minute: Doku on the right now, dances around the outside of Lascelles and his low cross is cleared. When the young winger is in this sort of mood you can't take your eyes off him.

48th minute: Doku vs Dubravka again and the Newcastle goalkeeper pulls of his best save of the game as the Belgium winger darts into the left-hand side of the penalty area and fires across goal.

46th minute: Off we go again. No changes for either side. With Julian Alvarez among the City substitutes, that probably means that Haaland is fine.

Fulltime: City halfway to their sixth consecutive FA Cup semifinal. They've been impressive and could be further ahead, although both of Bernardo Silva's goals came with a hefty slice of fortune. The medical staff will no doubt have a good look at Haaland, who spent two months on the sidelines with a foot problem earlier this season.

45th minute+2: Haaland is down and in pain in the centre-circle. Schar, who has been booked, trod on his foot. All accidental, so no need for any further punishment.

45th minute: Doku on the tear again. It feels like he's done everything but score in the past 10 minutes or so. Not this time. Another corner, where Newcastle's bold strategy of not really marking Haaland gets an airing. The striker's header across goal is glanced on by Dias and Dubravka saves.

42nd minute: Newcastle really struggling to deal with the high-octane City front three. Haaland to Doku, whose shot goes behind for a corner. Dubravka makes a mess of his punch but Newcastle see off the danger from the next one.

41st minute: Oh my days, what a dazzling turn from Foden, who gets away from the Newcastle defence. Guimaraes works back brilliantly and forces him to fire over.

38th minute: Doku, who's enjoying running at Newcastle from central positions close to Haaland, gets to the edge of the area and fires over.

36th minuteHuge chance for Newcastle! It's wingback to wingback as Burn gets up to nod Murphy's excellent ball back across goal. Isak fires goalwards from eight yards but it's a brilliant reaction stop from Ortega.

31st minute: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Bernardo Silva!!!!

Well, when it's your day, it's your day. Foden has a shot blocked by Schar. City keep hold of it. Dias feeds Silva who sizes up Burn again. He shoots again, it's deflected again (this time off Botman's head) and it's a goal again.

30th minute: Haaland heads back into crowded goalmouth. He can't make much of the second ball and Newcastle break. They can't make much of that as Isak fouls Gvardiol.

29th minute: Foden's free-kick is headed behind for a City corner.

28th minute: Doku us in his bike, Lascelles throws him off it. A second Newcastle defender into the book.

27th minute: Foden now tries from distance. It's a pretty wretched effort, way over.

26th minute: Ortega claims Murphy's low cross and City can break. No huge urgency about the attack, mind. Silva into the box but his skimming pass eludes Foden.

21st minute: Now Longstaff does win a corner for Newcastle. Good spell for the visitors. There's an offside as the ball is headed back across goal.

19th minute: Gordon gets a bit of a run on Akanji after a fine Guimaraes pass. He plays it to the underlapping Willock, who is blocked by Kovacic. It's a City goal kick into the bargain.

17th minute: Ortega comes out of his goal to get a head to the ball before Isak can have any fun. The City keeper then acrobatically palms away a Guimaraes cross. The hosts break despite Schar positively yee-haawing through the back of Haaland. The big man gets up and, after the advantage is played, the Switzerland defender goes into the book.

15th minute: Dubravka bravely gets to the ball with Haaland poised after Kovacic scooped a return pass in his direction. These are dangerous times for Newcastle right now. If City get another quickly it could turn into a torrid afternoon for Eddie Howe's injury-hit side.

11th minuteGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Bernardo Silva!!!!

The first time City truly settle into one of their calm, rumbling passages of play and it brings a reward. Possession comes over to Silva, who jinks into the area and sees his shot take a juicy deflection off Burn and in over a helpless Dubravka.

8th minute: Doku gets some stick about his end product at times. Leading a three-man break away with Haaland to one side a Foden to the other before failing to pick his pass won't exactly help matters.

7th minute: Foden in one of those pockets of space where he can do so much damage. He dinks a pass through for Doku and Murphy holds his ground well.

6th minute: Haaland's cross is deflected just away from Foden. City keep the attack alive before an unusually errant pass from Rodri brings things to a halt.

5th minute: Isak briefly look to be in behind City then as Murphy pinged a ball in behind the home defence. Dias probably played him onside, so needed to be alert to clear.

4th minute: Haaland spins Botman and the Newcastle defender cuts his losses with a foul. A promising first encounter with his marker for Haaland, although he's often likely to have more than one.

3rd minute: Haaland looks for Foden darting through but his pass is cut out. Newcastle look to respond through Gordon, who is flagged offside after Akanji mops up.

2nd minute: Lascelles now clumps into Doku on halfway. A textbook "let him know you're there" challenge.

1st minute: Doku has the well-staffed Newcastle defence backpedalling. Lascelles gets a challenge in.

2 mins before kickoff: The teams are out. A blast of Blue Moon and we'll be good to go. Newcastle have won the toss and switched the sides around. Manchester United did the same in the derby earlier this month, went ahead and conceded three in the second half.

20 mins before kickoff: Newcastle defeated Championship side Blackburn Rovers on penalties to set up this tie and they could go the distance again. All quarterfinal ties must now provide a winner on the day, with extra time and penalties on the agenda if the teams, who are currently going through their warmups on the pitch in front of me, cannot be separated.

40 mins before kickoff: Pep Guardiola spoke about Manchester City being hit by a "tsunami" at Anfield during last weekend's draw with Liverpool. The champions were largely able to steady the ship thanks to the introduction of Kovacic and Doku. The Croatia midfielder was a calming presence in the midfield, looking after possession in the way his manager craves, while Doku offered more attacking thrust down the left flank than Julian Alvarez had managed and almost stole the points when he rattled the inside of the post in the 89th minute.

55 mins before kickoff: Gordon starts for Newcastle but Tino Livramento is out. That means a defensive reshuffle and what looks like a back five. Gordon and Joe Willock will be the wide attackers in support of lone striker Alexander Isak.

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. Mateo Kovacic and Jeremy Doku are rewarded for impressive substitute cameos at Anfield last week with places in the City starting XI. Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol replace John Stones and Nathan Ake in the back four.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Team news will be along in the next 20 minutes. All eyes will be on whether Anthony Gordon is fit to start for Newcastle. The former Everton winger has caught the eye this season and was rewarded with a first senior England call-up this week. However, he went off injured during Monday's Premier League defeat to Chelsea. Initial fears that Gordon might be set for an extended spell on the sidelines proved to be wide of the mark and he is thought to be in line to feature today.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: As the absolutely incredible scenes at Molineux have just demonstrated, you shouldn't take anything for granted in the FA Cup. Well, apart from Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's team are aiming for a sixth successive semifinal appearance. You can probably take them for granted a little bit. City's involvement in the Carabao Cup was ended by Newcastle this season and this is the last shot at having something to show for their campaign for Eddie Howe's men. Surely they leave it all out on the field at the Etihad Stadium today.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the FA Cup quarterfinal between Manchester City and Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium. City are third in the Premier League but in contention for all three of the trophies they won last season, while this is Newcastle's last chance to end their 69-year trophy drought this season.
