Liverpool fought from a goal down to thrash Luton Town 4-1 on Wednesday and restore their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Erling Haaland's second-half goal was enough to see champions Manchester City beat Brentford 1-0 and move one point behind Jurgen Klopp's league leaders a day earlier.

Liverpool are battling something of an injury crisis and lined up without a host of regular stars to face Luton, with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Dominik Szoboszlai, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and goalkeeper Alisson among the players not in the squad.

  Fulltime Goal scorers
Liverpool 4 Van Dijk (56'), Gakpo (58'), Diaz (71'), Elliot (90')
Luton 1 Ogbene (12')

Starting lineups:

Liverpool (4-3-3, right to left): 62. Caoimhin Kelleher — 84. Conor Bradley, 78. Jarell Quansah, 4. Virgil van Dijk, 2. Joe Gomez — 10. Alexis Mac Allister, 3. Wataru Endo, 38. Ryan Gravenberch — 19. Harvey Elliot, 18. Cody Gakpo, 7. Luis Diaz.

Luton (3-4-2-1 right to left): 24. Thomas Kaminski (GK) — 15. Teden Mengi, 2. Gabriel Osho, 29. Amari'i Bell — 7. Chiedozie Ogbene, 28. Albert Sambi Lokonga, 6. Ross Barkley, 45. Alfie Doughty — 9. Carlton Morris, 14. Tahith Chong — 10. Cauley Woodrow

They suffered a scare when Luton took the lead after only 12 minutes, Chiedozie Ogbene burying a rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher had just about managed to keep out Tahith Chong's shot.

Luis Diaz missed the best of Liverpool's first-half chances as they went into the break trailing and looking a little short of inspiration. It didn't last long.

On 56 minutes, captain Virgil van Dijk dragged his team level with a powerful header from Alexis Mac Allister's corner, and barely 90 seconds later, Cody Gakpo glanced in the Reds' second from another Mac Allister cross.

Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski did his utmost to keep the visitors in the contest, but shortly after a rare Luton break ended in Alfie Doughty failing to capitalise on a Conor Bradley error, Luis Diaz finally found the net with a powerful strike.

Harvey Elliott added a late fourth following a defensive mix-up from Luton, who seemed to tire in the second half after putting in a spirited performance against Manchester United just three days ago.
