With the shock of Italy's failure to make a World Cup for the first time in 60 years finally sinking in, the Azzurri have been left embarrassed with reports they had already booked their hotel in Russia next year.
Pushed to a play-off with Sweden, Italy failed to overcome a 1-0 loss in the first leg with their less favoured opponents holding on for a goalless draw during the week to secure their spot at the 2018 World Cup.
So confident were the Azzurri of making the tournament, they jumped the gun securing relevant accommodation and are now left looking to offload it according to Danish outlet TV2.
Denmark, who will be at the World Cup after defeating the Republic of Ireland 5-1 in their second-leg qualifier, could save the Italians some money with negotiations set to begin over taking their booking.
With hotel options in Russia reducing rapidly, CEO of the Danish Football Association, Claus Bretton-Meyer, concedes though not the hotel they'd have picked, the Italian option may be their best bet.
"Now, there is a big difference between the preferences of the Danes and Italians," he said.
"But it's clear that we can end up in a situation where we must get what we can get."
