The Copa America 2024 will feature a historic change, with the tournament expanding to 16 national sides for the first time.

The increase in teams has ensured a major update on which countries will be represented, as the competition returns to the USA for the first time since the country's inaugural hosting in 2016.

The 2024 version will see the traditional 10 CONMEBOL representatives involved alongside six from CONCACAF —  including the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Tournament organizers are confident the added competition will increase excitement and the standard within the tournament, and 2024 could see a first non-CONMEBOL winner crowned in the weeks ahead.

How many guest nations are at Copa America 2024?

The change in structure means there are arguably no 'guest nations' at the 2024 tournament, with that title previously reserved for CONCACAF sides and teams from Asia and the Middle East.

In the past, CONMEBOL would decide on a tournament-by-tournament basis who to invite as a guest participant, and whilst nations in the 2024 competition not from their federation are still referred to as 'guests', they have actually been required to qualify.

The agreement to increase the participants to 16 meant six spots were awarded to CONCACAF nations, but for the first time, they needed to qualify, via the CONCACAF Nations League.

Jamaica and Panama joined the USA and Mexico in qualifying directly, with Canada and Costa Rica advancing via the playoffs.

Record of guest nations at Copa America

Ten non-CONMEBOL nations have appeared at the Copa America throughout its history prior to 2024, all via an invitation. The majority have been drawn from CONCACAF, alongside two sightings of Japan, and one for Qatar.

Mexico are the most frequently invited nation, with 11 appearances, with Costa Rica on six and the USA on five, including 2024.

Can the USA win Copa America 2024?

Can the USA make their mark on the Copa America this summer on the back of a run to the semifinals back in 2016? The eight years since losing out to Lionel Messi and Argentina in the last four have seen the USA take the fight to Mexico as CONCACAF's dominant power.

They gained revenge over El Tri in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning the 2021 final, after losing to their arch rivals in the 2019 showpiece. That has been built upon by three successive CONCACAF Nations League titles, and they go into this tournament ranked 11th by FIFA, compared to Mexico in 14th.

The key question will come against the superpowers of Brazil and Argentina, alongside a group-stage clash with Uruguay, but their last three World Cup knockout stage exits were at the hands of European or African opposition.

Argentina look strongly placed to retain their title, but the USA are continuing with their forward momentum, and a run deep into the knockout stages should be expected.
