After lifting the inaugural Europa Conference League title last season, Jose Mourinho looks to push AS Roma one step further as the Italian side visits Dutch club Feyenoord in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal matchup.

Feyenoord will be looking for revenge, as they fell 1-0 in the Conference League final to this Roma side, and now the two meet in the slightly more prestigious tournament the following year.

It's a clash of styles in this meeting, as Feyenoord have blasted Dutch competition this season and hammered Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League Round of 16 to an 8-2 aggregate. Yet they will meet a Roma defence that has locked down Italian opposition for the last few months.

The first leg of these matches can often be tense affairs as clubs look to survive to the second 90-minute affair. Roma will especially take that to heart as they return home to the Italian capital next week.

The Sporting News football betting expert Kyle Bonn shares his best bets, props, and high risk/high return fliers for some of the biggest matches in the sport each week. Since the start of 2023, his best bets have hit 51.8% of the time, while his overall selections have generated a profit of over 38 units thus far. He has also correctly predicted 45 of 83 match outcomes via his 3-way moneyline leans to date.

Feyenoord vs Roma prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: AS Roma (+210)
  • Handicap lean: AS Roma +0.5 (-175)
  • Score prediction: Feyenoord 0-1 AS Roma

Feyenoord are slight favourites at home, given how dominant they've been in domestic play, riding a high-flying attack that's scoring in bunches. That prolific forward unit will go up against one of Europe's most in-form defensive lines of AS Roma, who are given a good chance to come out on top as well despite being labeled underdogs.

Interestingly, while Feyenoord have their noses out in front, the betting market still seems to favour a defensive as the under is a huge favourite.

    Feyenoord vs Roma best bet

    • Pick: Both teams to score — NO
    • Odds: -135 (BetMGM)

As you will see shortly, there's plenty of reason to believe that Feyenoord will find the back of the net in this match. However, even if they do score, seeing both sides bag a goal would be an even greater anomaly.

Only five of Roma's 14 Serie A matches in 2023 have featured both teams scoring, and one of those was a 1-1 draw. Feyenoord have great young attacking talent, but it will be tough sledding here.

    Feyenoord vs Roma prop bet

    • Pick: Feyenoord under 0.5 total goals
    • Odds: +210 (BetMGM)

The defensive structure of Jose Mourinho's side in the past few months has been admirable. Since 2023 began, only four times out of 14 Serie A matches have Roma conceded over 1.0 expected goals, keeping seven clean sheets in that span. In one of those, against the most prolific team in Europe, Napoli managed exactly 1.0 xG. In another, they conceded 1.09 xG to AC Milan.

Yes, young overseas talents Santi Gimenez and Igor Paixao are in great form, and Feyenoord are at home, but Mourinho knows what he's up against. He managed to hold this Feyenoord side scoreless in their Conference League final meeting last year, a squad that included Tyrell Malacia and Luis Sinisterra, both players eventually sold to Premier League clubs.

    Feyenoord vs Roma prop bet

    • Pick: Santi Gimenez 2+ shots on target
    • Odds: +210 (FanDuel)

While Feyenoord may not find the back of the net, Santi Gimenez will be the lead man up front for the Dutch side as they push for a way through the Roma back line. The 21-year-old Mexican international has scored an incredible 11 goals in his last 14 appearances for Feyenoord, but it's his volume that's truly eye-popping.

In his last nine Eredivise matches, he's ripped off 25 shots, putting 10 on frame. Football statistical aggregator SmarterScout puts Gimenez in the 99th percentile of attacking output when compared to a Premier League level, meaning he would be projected amongst the league leaders in the shooting category if he played in the English top flight. Even if they fail to score, he will likely be a big part of the push to break through.
