Everton vs Man City score, result, highlights as Gundogan and Haaland move Guardiola's men closer to title image

GOODISON PARK, LIVERPOOL — Erling Haaland’s 52nd goal of the season and Ilkay Gundogan’s second brace in as many weekends saw Premier League leaders Manchester City take a huge step towards another title with a 3-0 win over Everton.

A game against relegation-threatened opponents nestled in the middle of a two-legged Champions League semifinal carried a degree of trepidation for the leaders, who were short of their best early on and should have gone behind when Mason Holgate missed a close-range chance from a corner in the 35th-minute.

City swiftly made Everton pay when Gundogan controlled Riyad Mahrez’s cross on his thigh with his back to goal and flicked an improvised finish beyond Jordan Pickford.

Gundogan, whose City career remains up in the air with his contract up at the end of the campaign, then turned provider with a chipped cross from the left that Haaland headed home.

The Germany playmaker scored both goals in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium and he dispatched a sumptuous free-kick early in the second half after Jamer Garner brought down Phil Foden.

MORE: Erling Haaland vs Dixie Dean goal record: Man City star chasing most goals scored in a season

City’s attentions now turn towards Wednesday’s showdown against Real Madrid, with that Champions League blockbuster all square at 1-1. A superior goal difference to Arsenal means Guardiola’s side realistically need a maximum of five points from their remaining league matches against Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford to be crowned champions for the fifth time in six seasons.

Everton are a point and a place above the relegation zone with two games to play. A victory for Leicester against Liverpool on Monday would shunt them back into the bottom three.

Is Ilkay Gundogan leaving Man City?

The first signing of the Guardiola era when he joined from Borussia Dortmund for a bargain £20m in 2016, Gundogan’s current deal expires next month. The seeming sticking point is the City board’s unwillingness to sanction anything longer than a one-year extension for a 32-year-old with two major knee injuries in his past.

Guardiola made a thinly veiled grumble that he did not necessarily agree with director of football Txiki Begiristain on this matter and, witnessing Gundogan in full flight at Goodison Park, it was easy to see why. There is no player who has a more intuitive understanding of Guardiola’s specific tactical demands. His awareness of space and time on a football field is harnessed by a silky-smooth capacity to exploit both.

After Holgate fluffed his lines, the man who scored the goals to clinch the title last season found another huge moment for City. Gundogan’s touch and finish were exquisite to break the deadlock, with his assist for Haaland and a free-kick to seal the points in a similar bracket of quality. They’d be mad to let him go and you suspect Guardiola knows as much.

How many touches did Erling Haaland have vs Everton?

It’s been a spectator sport within a spectator sport this season to observe how few touches Haaland has on his quieter outings. On Merseyside, he outdid himself.

After half an hour, he’d had one. His third touch was the header to convert Gundogan’s cross. He still made his presence felt jostling with Yerry Mina — whose appetite for the dark arts was taken to task by Guardiola after the final whistle.

Haaland had made way for Jack Grealish by that point. In total he managed 13 touches, won both duels he contested and arguably should have won a penalty off Pickford. It was a lesson in brutal efficiency.

Have Everton ever been relegated?

You have to go back to 1950/51 for the last time Everton fell out of the top flight and a third relegation in the club’s history would stain the careers of anyone involved if it happens.

Holgate’s miss might yet look like an uncomfortable sliding doors moment in the final analysis but the full-throated support the Gwladys Street End gave to their players at fulltime suggested Everton’s fans know the defining moments lie ahead.

Unless Leicester beat Liverpool on Monday, Sean Dyche’s side will remain outside the relegation places heading into the final two weekends of the season.

If they reproduce the industry and discipline they showed for the first 35 minutes here then they should be okay after games against Wolves and Bournemouth, even if another potential injury to talismanic forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin feels like a body blow.

"Dom had a tight groin and because of his history we had to get him off," Dyche said afterwards. "We'll have to wait and see but the hope is he came off before damage was done."

Everton vs Man City live updates, highlights from the Premier League

Fulltime: "Oh Everton we love you!" howls the remaining Gwladys Street crowd. They appreciate their player's efforts today and know the outcomes of what follows against Wolves and Bournemouth will be far more defining than anything that happened today. The City players take in the applause from a jubilant away end. It feels like they're almost there. Two wins from the remaining three matches will seal the title. Realistically, a superior goal difference to Arsenal means they need five more points. If the Gunners slip up against Brighton today, it could be done next weekend when Pep Guardiola's side host Chelsea. We'll see you then!

90th minute: There'll be four additional minutes. Not sure how necessary that is, to be perfectly honest. Stick a fork in this game, it's done.

88th minute: Rodri gets to put his feet up. Everton fans are steadily streaming to the exits. A couple of minutes of Kalvin Phillips clearly not lighting their candle.

87th minute: Some definite Everton pressure but there's Dias in the way again. It's easy to forget that this was hard work during the half hour for the visitors and their Portugal centre-back relished every bit of it.

86th minute: We're winding down here. Kalvin Phillips, who some internet rogues tried to vote City's player of the season this week, is coming on for his latest inconsequential cameo.

78th minute: The goalscorers are on their way. Silva and Grealish replace Gundogan and Haaland.

76th minute: Demarai Gray comes on for Everton, Garner he man to make way. Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish are ready to come on for the visitors.

75th minute: City break, Mahrez crosses towards Haaland. Patterson does well to make a nuisance of himself. Pickford then collides puppyishly with Haaland but there'll be no penalty.

67th minute: That's the fourth corner in a row City don't deal particularly well with at all but they get away with it. We're now midway to the half, Pep Guardiola has his side 3-0 to the good and with Real Madrid coming up on Wednesday and there are no particular signs of substitutions about to be made.

66th minute: Ederson, who struggled under Garner's previous corner, punches over his own bar. In it comes from the right, Ederson pushes Onana's header against the bar and over. That's a fine stop from the Manchester City goalkeeper, even if it was his fault he had to make it in the first place.

65th minute: Sloppy from City at the back and McNeil has chance to line up a 25-yards. Dias make a block and it's a corner.

60th minute: City break with palpable menace. Foden stands up a cross to Haaland, who tries one of his acrobatic volleys but the radar is off.

59th minute: Onana thumps a low cross against Dias to win a corner. Something for the home fans to cheer. It's been a while. Garner takes, Ederson can't hold it, Haaland back to defend and City half clear. Walker then fully clears by ploughing it out for a throw-in.

56th minute: Onana and Coady come on for Gueye and Holgate. The latter's removal is lustily/sarcastically cheered by some of the home fans, which isn't very nice. It looks like James Tarkowski is going to have a go at left-back.

54th minute: Mahrez tried a mirror-image of that Gundogan strike but it deflects off the wall and it goes behind.

53rd minute: Holgate is having a wretched time of things out at left-back against Mahrez, who he hacks down and City have another tasty free-kick.

51st minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Ilkay Gundogan!!!!!

Beautiful strike from Gundogan. That looked set up for Mahrez to take but the Germany playmaker curls beyond Pickford for his second brace in as many weeks. There was a bit of a delay as Foden received treatment and Everton didn't like how far back referee Taylor put their wall. It was a strike of such quality that I'm not entirely sure it mattered.

49th minute: Garner brings down a rampaging Foden on the edge of the Everton box. Anthony Taylor will have had harder yellow cards to decide upon, it's safe to say.

46th minute: We're back and, in a blow bigger than either of the City goals, Calvert-Lewin has not re-emerged for Everton. Neal Maupay is on in his place.

Halftime: City swagger into the break and, very possibly towards the title. Ten minutes or so ago, Guardiola's men were struggling against a committed and pro-active Everton side, who might have led through Mason Holgate. But Ilkay Gundogan found the breakthrough goal with a little bit of genius before setting up the inevitable Erling Haaland. This stadium was approaching its bear-pit best not long ago but now sounds like a man being hit repeatedly in the gut aboard a deflating hot-air balloon. Catch you back here after some refreshments of your choice.

45th minute+1: Everton are hanging on. Foden dances down the left and Haaland can't quite get enough on the header. Walker then gets down the right and Gundogan almost has his second as the ball is scrambled out of the goalmouth.

44th minute: Mahrez's delivery is cleared as far as Walker, whose shot briefly looks destined for the second tier of the Gwladys Street Stand before nestling halfway up the first. I'm sure it seemed like a great idea at the time.

43rd minute: Haaland makes a nuisance of himself and wins a freekick about 40 yards out.

39th minute:GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!!

City go bang, bang right after their worst period of the game. Brilliant once again from Gundogan, who combines with Foden to scoot down the left. His chipped cross is headed gleefully home by Haaland beyond Pickford's best efforts. Third touch of the game for the big man and a 52nd goal of the season.

37th minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Ilkay Gundogan!!!!!

The man who clinched the title for City last season has another huge goal in the run-in. There didn't look to be too much on when the ball pinged around near the Everton six-yard box. Like much of this game, the action was going on around Haaland, but Gundogan pivoted to prod an improved finish beyond Pickford before tearing off in delight.

35th minuteBig chance! Knockdown at the far post and it falls to Holgate, who stretches to boot over from four yards.

34th minute: That's a sublime touch from Calvert-Lewin! It needs a last-ditch challenge from Walker. Everton corner on the right. Is this their moment?

33rd minute: City eventually clear. It looks like Alvarez might be through on goal but a flurry of blue shirts get back to disabuse him of that notion. Goodison is rocking, they love what they're seeing from their team.

32nd minute: Alvarez is casually dispossessed by Garner. Calvert-Lewin into the City half but he's all on his own. In percentage terms, Mahrez probably did not need to make that foul.

31st minute: City have another corner. This time on the right thanks to Kyle Walker. Mahrez to take. Short Foden, whose low shot is blocked.

30th minute: Down the line towards Calvert-Lewin, Dias wins this round. But again it's excellent from Everton out of possession as City can't build anything with their possession. It's been a disciplined and pro-active performance so far from Sean Dyche's side.

28th minute: City work their best short-corner so far form the left. Everton need to be alive to that. The attack ends with Mahrez blasting way over from outside the box.

26th minute: McNeil swings in a free-kick from deep. Dias heads behind. Ederson punches clear. Haaland has not touched the ball yet, by the way.

23rd minute: Another left-wing corner for the visitors. Ilkay Gundogan to take. It's short to Alvarez, who tried to work something with Mahrez. Back to Gundogan, who curls one harmlessly over the far corner. City yet to create anything of note.

22nd minute: Alvarez has been low-key impressive from deadball situations since joining City. However, he's just leathered a corner straight into the Gwladys Street End, so that might be the last one he gets to take for a while.

20th minute: McNeil is getting back gamely to help out Holgate in his unfamiliar left-back role as City continue to target that side. Everton clear, with Calvert-Lewin again the outlet. Dias win the challenge but the hosts have a throw-in on halfway. It's a great battle between those two so far.

17th minute: Bright from Mahrez, who retrieves a second ball and skips past McNeil. Laporte and Akanji get heads to the cross, it falls to Alvarez but there's an offside in there somewhere.

15th minute: Foden looks to run Patterson and succeeds in winning a corner. Gundogan takes from the left, short to Alvarez and Calvert-Lewin heads his delivery clear. There'll be a stoppage because Mina is down in the box. Possible antics from a master of the genre.

14th minute: Mahrez gets Alvarez around the back of the Everton defence but Tarkowski is there to block his cutback with Haaland lurking.

13th minute: Calvert-Lewin comes deep now in the sort of piece of play that Guardiola will quietly appreciate on the touchline. Mahrez scampers back to end the Everton attack.

12th minute: Calvert-Lewis vs Dias, mano-e-mano and DCL gets the better of the exchange. The switch in play doesn't come off but Everton manage to snuff out City's attempts to counter.

9th minute: Tarkowski clear a Foden cross and Iwobi launches the counter, sliding a ball through to Doucoure. Against most defenders he'd be in, but Walker gets out that astonishing recovery pace to mop up under pressure.

8th minute: Mahrez cracks it to the near post where Calvert-Lewin does his defensive duties well.

7th minute: Akanji switches play to Walker. The overlapping Mahrez wins a free-kick deep down the Everton left.

6th minute: The hosts have their fist chance to pick out Mina from the left but Dias rises to clear. Dyche's men snapping into challenges in the City half, he'll like what he's seen so far.

5th minute: A ropey backpass almost sells Pickford short with Haaland in close attendance. Big man-character energy with those two. The England goalkeeper boots clear and Everton win a corner.

4th minute: Calvert-Lewin makes a smart knockdown to Doucoure but the return pass for the Everton centre-forward is overhit. Right idea, though.

2nd minute: Some stuff just happened behind a pillar that I couldn't see. Goodison Park, baby!

1st minute: Julian Alvarez gets us underway. Looks like Laporte at centre-back and Akanji at left-back for City. An early cross goes in Haaland's general direction and Garner boots clear.

2 mins from kickoff: Z-Cars kicks in and a pretty pensive atmosphere gives way to a wall of noise as the teams emerge. Everton in their traditional blue, City in their atomic bee third strip.

15 mins from kickoff: If Everton could hand City their first defeat since February 5 it would be absolutely colossal in the context of the fight for survival. The Toffees have played 35 matches, one fewer than Leeds, who are a point and a place below them. Victory would move Everton to 35 points, up to 16th above Nottingham Forest on 34. Bottom-placed Southampton had their fate sealed yesterday, while Leicester have 30 points form 35 matches but face a daunting assignment against Champions League-chasing Liverpool on Monday.

30 mins from kickoff: One of the post-game talking points after Real Madrid 1-1 Man City was whether Antonio Rudiger had found a template when it comes to nullifying Erling Haaland. The former Chelsea man approached all his defensive work on the front foot and relished the physical battle with the hulking Norweigan. You'd think Yerry Mina, restored to form and fitness under Dyche, will take a very similar approach this afternoon. The recently crowned FWA Footballer of the Year could have a battle on his hands.

50 mins from kickoff: And this is how the Everton team looks. One change from midweek as Mason Holgate replaces Vitalii Mykolenko, who is presumably injured as he's not in the matchday 18. That probably means out-of-position detail at leftback for Holgate against Riyad Mahrez, who will be trying to secure a start for City against Madrid. All the very best!

1 hr from kickoff: The teams are in!

1 hr 20 mins from kickoff: They’re serving braised beef in the Goodison media room today and Pep Guardiola has beef with the Eurovision song contest. Well, that’s overstating it a little, but the City boss would have rathered this was a Saturday game to allow an extra day of preparation for Madrid.

But Liverpool’s hosting of the all-singing, all-dancing (literally) jamboree meant that was not possible on security grounds. As such, there will be a little more than the usual curiosity over the Guardiola teamsheet that will drop in around 20 minutes.

It sounds like Erling Haaland will start, on Dixie Dean’s manor, no less. "He had a really intense game in Madrid, he could not have done if he was tired," Guardiola said on Friday. "I would say yeah, he can go a while, I think it’s fine."

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: The equation for Manchester City is relatively simple. On account of an advantage to the tune of 14 on goal difference, Pep Guardiola’s side realistically need eight points from their remaining Premier League games to claim a fifth title in six seasons.

A win at Goodison Park against an Everton side scrapping for their lives would take out a sizeable chunk of that. If City win and Arsenal lose later in the day against Brighton, the champions can get the job done when they host Chelsea next weekend.

Where it gets more complicated is this game’s placement in the middle of a Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. City are fighting for honours on three fronts and Madrid are in Manchester on Wednesday following this week’s titanic battle at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Talking of the midweek action, Everton ripped up the form book to demolish Brighton 5-1 and move out of the relegation zone. From looking doomed, a positive result here would bring survival tantalisingly within reach for Sean Dyche’s side. This famous old stadium will be rocking come 2 p.m.

2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Everton versus Manchester City at Goodison Park on another big afternoon at both ends of the Premier League table.

Everton vs Man City lineups

Dyche will know that even a point in this match could be vital for Everton's survival hopes, but it is likely that he will stick to a back four instead of a more defensive formation.

Mason Holgate replaced left-back Vitalii Mykolenko in the Toffee's only change from the Brighton win. The Ukraine international is absent from the matchday 18.

Everton lineup (4-3-3): Pickford (GK) — Patterson, Mina, Tarkowski, Holgate — Garner, Doucoure, Gueye — Iwobi, Calvert-Lewin, McNeil

Guardiola rested Kevin De Bruyne on the bench after his Santiago Bernabeu heroics but Kyle Walker and Erling Haaland were among those starting who you presume will have big roles against Madrid on Wednesday.

Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez can all press their claims for a more prominent role in the second leg having been unused substitutes in training Nathan Ake is back in training after a muscular injury but is not part of Guardiola's matchday squad.

Man CIty lineup (4-1-4-1): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Akanji, Dias, Laporte — Rodri — Mahrez, Alvarez, Gundogan, Foden — Haaland
