England knockout stage record under Gareth Southgate: Three Lions results at major tournaments after losing Euro 2024 final image

England coach Gareth Southgate is expected to leave his role at the end of Euro 2024 with the former defender previously suggesting he will not sign a contract extension.

Southgate's deal expires at the end of this year and it seems unlikely he will renew, although the pain of losing the final again may well see him put off any decision for a little while.

The 53-year-old has led the Three Lions to two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships, but despite coming close to ending a barren run of trophies, Southgate is yet to win a title.

The Sporting News looks at how the Three Lions have fared in knockout matches under Southgate's leadership.

Under Southgate, England have appeared in five international tournaments, with seven wins and five defeats across 15 knockout-stage games. Three other matches ended in draws: the 2018 World Cup Round of 16 game against Colombia, after which they won on penalties; the final of Euro 2020, when they lost to Italy in a shootout after a 1-1 draw; and the quarterfinal of Euro 2024 against Switzerland, when the Three Lions triumphed 5-3 in the shootout after another 1-1 scoreline.

Four of those 14 games ended in defeat. They lost 2-1 to Croatia in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup after extra time, and they went on to suffer a 2-0 defeat to Belgium in the third-place playoff match. Four years later, they exited the World Cup at the quarterfinal stage after a 2-1 loss to France. In between those tournaments, they were beaten 3-1 in the semifinals of the UEFA Nations League by the Netherlands.

When did Gareth Southgate become England manager?

Southgate was named England caretaker boss in September 2016 following Roy Hodgson's departure after a humiliating Euro 2016 exit to Iceland, and Sam Allardyce's resignation after just one game in charge.

The FA was keen to promote a more positive image, with Allardyce's exit coming on the back of a newspaper sting, in which he was recorded apparently offering advice on how to get around rules on player transfers.

Southgate was installed as permanent head coach in October and led the team to qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
