The inaugural CONCACAF W Championship will crown the best national women's soccer team on the North American continent, but it carries even more weight than that: Direct berths are being handed out to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2024 Olympics.

The USA, ranked No. 1 in the world, headline the competition alongside No. 6-ranked Canada, and each were placed in separate groups and will meet in the final after a perfect run of matches without conceding a single goal.

Host Mexico was the next highest-ranked nation in the region at No. 26 in the FIFA World Rankings, but El Tri Femenil crashed out in the group stage. Costa Rica, the fourth-best ranked nation at No. 37, have impressed and will play the third-place game against Jamaica.

The Americans have never missed out on a FIFA World Cup or Olympics tournament, but their performances haven't been entirely convincing and they'll have their work cut out for them to get past a surging Canada side that has improved with every match.

CONCACAF W Championship: What's at stake

The CONCACAF W Championship featured eight teams split into two groups (Groups A & B). After round-robin play concluded in each group, the top two teams advanced to the knockout semifinals with A1 facing B2 and B1 taking on A2 in single-elimination matches.

The final will be played on July 18 with the third-place match unfolding a mere hours before. Third-place will matter to the winner because here's what's at stake in the tournament:

  • 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup berths: The top two teams in each group — USA, Jamaica, Canada and Costa Rica — clinched an automatic berth to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The third-place finishers in each group — Haiti and Panama — advance to a 10-team FIFA intercontinental playoff which will hand out the final three World Cup berths.

  • 2024 Summer Olympic berths: The winner of the W Championship between the USA and Canada will earn a direct berth to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The second- and third-place finishers will do battle for the second automatic Olympic spot via a head-to-head play-in match in September 2023.

  • 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup berths: The top three finishers all qualify directly for the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup tournament. The rest of the Gold Cup field will be determined by a qualifying competition held in the latter half of 2023.
