Chasing history: What does Toronto FC need to do to set the all-time MLS points record? image

Toronto FC has frequently been on the wrong side of history during its 11-year existence, but 2017 could see the club set several positive records for a change.

Currently 10 points clear at the top of the combined MLS standings, TFC has been a near-unstoppable force both at home and away from BMO Field this year. With two games left to play, there are a number of marks that Toronto could hit in its quest to solidify itself as one of the best teams of all time.

Supporters' Shield

CLINCHED.

TFC claimed the Supporters' Shield thanks to a 4-2 win over the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 30.

All-time points record (68)

CLINCHED.

With the 2-2 draw at Atlanta to end the regular season, TFC surpassed the 1998 LA Galaxy by one point.

Goals scored in a season (85)

This one is more far-fetched, as the '98 Galaxy filled the net during an era when MLS defences were nowhere near what they are today. That team scored at a ridiculous rate of 2.66 goals per game, yet its 85 total goals were only four better than the second-best club that same year.

Toronto's 72 goals (2.18 per game) pales by comparison. This is one record that may never be broken.

Goal differential (+41)

Again, it's the '98 Galaxy that Toronto (+37) is chasing. TFC projects to finish the 2017 season at around +38.

Domestic treble

No MLS club has won the treble in a single season, and as TFC creeps toward the Supporters' Shield talk of the accomplishment will heat up.

The domestic treble consists of the U.S. Open Cup/Canadian Championship, Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup, and Toronto claimed a second-consecutive Canadian Championship in an epic two-legged series with the Montreal Impact earlier this year.

Several clubs have won two of the three, but TFC aims to be the first to complete the treble.

Two down, one to go.
