Two of the biggest-spending soccer clubs in the world will face off for the most prestigious title in Europe when Manchester City and Chelsea go head-to-head in an all-English UEFA Champions League final.

Budget-busting Manchester City are looking to culminate a more than decade-long quest to win their first Champions League in their first final. London-based Chelsea, with deep pockets of their own, are eyeing a second title (2012) on their third trip to the final.

What’s guaranteed is that an American player will hoist the trophy. U.S. men’s national team stars and fellow Pennsylvania natives Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) and Zack Steffen (Manchester City) will be on opposite sides of this matchup. Pulisic is expected to become the first American to take the field in a Champions League final, while Steffen will be waiting in the wings on the bench as the backup goalkeeper.

Manchester City have enjoyed a dream season thus far, overcoming a slow start to win both the English Premier League and the League Cup (aka EFL Cup, aka Carabao Cup). They’ve steamrolled the opposition on all fronts, outscoring opponents by a staggering 131-41 across 60 official matches. At one point they also rattled off a club-record 21 straight wins. And they’re still undefeated in UEFA Champions League matches this season: 11 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses.

Coached by legendary manager Pep Guardiola, the “Citizens” lost just 7 times in the 60 matches played this year, boosted by the emergence of star Portuguese central defender Ruben Dias. But two of those seven defeats came against Chelsea and their German head coach Thomas Tuchel.

After taking over in midseason from Frank Lampard, Tuchel’s new tactical approach rejuvenated Chelsea, turning them into a defensive juggernaut. But their season has nearly unraveled of late with goal scoring proving their Achilles heel. They were shut out in an FA Cup final loss and they dropped two of their final three Premier League matches which nearly cost them an automatic berth to next year’s Champions League.

Chelsea will be content with letting Manchester City dictate play and trying to turn them over for quick transition opportunities. Chelsea's speedy attackers, Pulisic and Timo Werner, are at their best when they have space to run into and wreak havoc.

But if Manchester City’s star-studded attacking front finds the opening goal, it could be lights out for Chelsea, who struggle to break down opponents that sit back and defend. In the six matches in which Chelsea have conceded the first goal under Tuchel, they’ve only come back to win a single game (it happened to be against ManCity). Compare that record to the 19 games under Tuchel in which Chelsea have scored first: 17 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss.

Given those trends -- Manchester City have won 41 of 45 matches in which they've scored first -- and the uncompromising defensive talent on both sides, the “score-first-and-win” lines at plus money for both teams could present the most attractive bet.

Their two wins over Manchester City will ultimately be the reason that Chelsea will be considered by many as live underdogs in the Champions League final despite injury concerns involving two key starters. Tuchel indicated that he expects goalkeeper Edouard Mendy (bruised ribs) and midfield engine Ngolo Kante (hamstring) to make full recoveries ahead of the final. Losing Kante would be a serious blow: They’ve lost four of the six matches that Kante has missed this season.

Manchester City will be at full strength.

Where is the Champions League final played?

The final had been scheduled to be played in Istanbul, but organizers moved the match to Portugal with just two weeks remaining. That decision was prompted by the UK government placing Turkey on its COVID-19 “red list,” meaning Chelsea and Manchester City supporters would have faced travel restrictions.

UEFA initially attempted to move it to England for obvious reasons, but quarantine rules proved a stumbling block. So the 50,000-seat Estadio Dragao in Porto will host its first-ever Champions League final, the second consecutive year that the event is being held in Portugal. The final capacity has yet to be announced, but a total of 6,000 tickets were allotted to both clubs for their traveling supporters.
