John Herdman leads Canada into the nation's first World Cup finals since 1986, ending a decades-long drought. The CONCACAF nation has created a buzz and excitement around the team by reaching the tournament in Qatar, finishing second in North American qualifying.

Heading into the 2022 World Cup, Les Rouges are considered a longshot not just to win the tournament, obviously, but even to qualify for the knockout stage amidst a difficult Group F draw.

Canada will have to contend with Belgium, ranked No. 2 in the world, plus 2018 finalists Croatia and top African side Morocco.

Yet Herdman, set to become the first head coach ever to lead both a women's and men's side at the World Cup, will have his team primed to produce an upset or two as they head into Qatar with little to lose, building towards the next tournament four years from now as joint hosts of the 2026 event along with the United States and Mexico.

Odds of Canada advancing to World Cup knockout stage

According to oddsmakers, Canada, ranked 41st in the world by FIFA, are considered the least-likely team in Group F to qualify for the knockout stage.

They are even thought to be below Morocco, who are also considered longshots behind the pair of strong European sides. Belgium are ranked second in the world and boast significant top talent, while Croatia reached the 2018 final behind a stellar tournament from Luka Modric.

What are the odds of Canada winning the World Cup?

Canada are not thought to be remotely in the picture for the latter stages of the 2022 World Cup, considered heavy longshots to even reach the final match.

Still, oddsmakers do concede there's a possibility of a group stage upset, with Canada at +275 to reach the knockout stage. All it would take is a victory over Morocco and possibly another surprise result against one of the two European nations, and Canada could find themselves in the Round of 16.

Can Canada win World Cup 2022? Path to World Cup final

A trio of matches against high-quality opponents will be between Canada and a spot in the knockout stage, starting with the toughest of the group as they meet Belgium in their opening game. They'll then match up against Croatia before a finish against Morocco, needing points from those matches to have a chance at moving on.

Should Canada escape the group stage, their potential path through the knockout round will be determined by their eventual finish in the group. A second-place finish sees them on one side of the bracket from the first-place finisher, and visa versa.

Canada open their World Cup proceedings with a tall task, matched up against the world's No. 2-ranked team in Belgium.

Roberto Martinez's side have high expectations in this tournament, and they'll be considered a massive test for Les Rouges. Romelu Lukaku's health will be something to watch as he was recently injured on club duty with Inter Milan, and even if he proves fit enough to make the roster, he could be less than 100 percent for the opening match.

Whether or not Canada get something from the opener, they'll have to dust themselves off and move on as they meet 2018 finalists Croatia.

Canada are thought to have a better chance against Luka Modric and company than in the first match against Belgium, but Les Rouges are still heavy underdogs. Still, John Herdman will consider the opponent there for the taking, as they sport an aging squad.

Canada will finish the World Cup group stage with a match against African side Morocco, ranked 22nd in the world.

Should Canada remain in contention for qualification to the knockout stage at this point, this match will be considered a must-win. Even if Canada are eliminated, this game could be an opportunity for Herdman's side to collect a result for the fans to savor before enjoying the rest of the tournament as neutrals.
