Canada may have slumped to its first defeat of World Cup qualifying last time out against Costa Rica, but spirits are still high as ever among Les Rouges, who can now secure a 2022 World Cup berth in front of the home fans when they host Jamaica in Toronto on Sunday.

The CONCACAF World Cup qualifying leaders slipped after Mark-Anthony Kaye got himself sent off in the last match, but the overall performance by 10-man Canada deserved more than a loss. Canada still inched closer to a World Cup thanks to results elsewhere, and now requires just a single point to be officially invited to Qatar.

A win or draw against Jamaica officially secures a World Cup spot, but Canada can still get in with other results. The Canadians can't mathematically be caught by Panama, but Costa Rica is still within reach. However, if the Ticos drop any points in their match on the same day, then Canada would secure one of the three direct regional berths no matter the final result against Jamaica.

A 2022 World Cup place for Canada would be just the North American nation's second in history and first since 1986.

Canada vs. Jamaica projected lineups

Aside from the absence of Alphonso Davies, who is recovering from myocarditis, there are a few other absences for head coach John Herdman to work around. Most notably, Mark-Anthony Kaye is suspended for the match after he was sent off against Costa Rica. Samuel Piette also has an ankle injury and is not on the roster.

It's likely that Herdman sticks with the starting lineup against Costa Rica, with only Atiba Hutchinson sliding forward to take Kaye's midfield role, while Steven Vitoria comes back into his usual spot at center back. Vitoria missed the Costa Rica match with a fitness problem, but would be a natural fit to fill the gap.

Sam Adekugbe and Doneil Henry both return to the Canada squad after yellow card suspensions. Henry could be a backup option if Vitoria still isn't fit, while Adekugbe will need to win his spot back from Richie Lareya, who played well against Costa Rica.

Canada projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Borjan (GK) — Adekugbe, Miller, Vitoria, Johnston — Hutchinson, Eustaquio — David, Osorio, Buchanan — Larin

Jamaica worked hard for its 1-1 home draw against El Salvador last time out, coming from behind to draw level. The Reggae Boyz ripped off 13 shots and created three big chances on that day, finally cashing in through QPR's Andre Gray. His strike partner, Leon Bailey of Aston Villa, has started three World Cup qualification matches during this cycle, with Jamaica gaining points in all three.

We'll see if interim head coach Paul Hall opts to introduce some of the younger players called into the squad with the idea of giving them international experience after the Reggae Boyz were mathematically eliminated in the previous qualifying window. Among the new names is the leading scorer in the Jamaican Premier League, 28-year-old forward Atapharoy Bygrave.

Jamaica projected starting lineup (3-5-2): Blake (GK) — Lowe, Mariappa, King — Leigh, Morrison, Williams, Bailey, Brown — Green, Gray

Canada vs. Jamaica betting odds

Canada come into this match as heavy favorites to not just secure World Cup qualification but do so in style. Jamaica, already eliminated from World Cup contention, has little to play for.

The Reggae Boyz have kept just two clean sheets across all 12 qualifying matches so far, with one coming at home against last-placed Honduras. The other came in the reverse fixture of this match, with Canada out-passing Jamaica 2-1 but coming up empty on its five shots on target.

Jamaica was dangerous on set pieces in that encounter, coming close on a number of occasions, and that has been Canada's weak point throughout qualifying. That will be Jamaica's way through in Toronto as well, but the finishing has to be better.

  • Both teams to score: Yes +125 / No -165
