Can Arsenal still win Premier League 2023 title? Gunners chase City with win vs Newcastle image

For much of the season, Arsenal had been chugging steadily towards their first Premier League title since 2004, but it's all gone awry in recent weeks.

The Gunners' title charge is in the balance as the consequence of an untimely four-match winless run that culminated in a painful 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on April 26.

Arsenal now face their closing matches of a memorable season, and they hope to win all of them in order to give themselves the best chance of putting pressure on City the rest of the way.

But City, who have won each of the last two Premier League titles and three of the last four, are looking stronger with every match and clearly have the edge given their games in hand on the Gunners.

So City are considered the favourites, as Arsenal lurk in the hope of a City slip-up or two to provide an opening for one final shot at the title. The Sporting News breaks down how that could happen.

Can Arsenal win 2023 Premier League title

Arsenal can still win the Premier League title but the opportunities are slowly slipping away with every passing week.

The recent three-match run of Arsenal draws allowed Man City to climb back into the race, and then defeat to Pep Guardiola's side on April 26 saw City take a commanding edge in the race.

Arsenal momentarily regained the top spot with a victory over Chelsea on May 2, but Man City have two games in hand and could potentially take back the top spot for good with their next match.

Although Man City control their own destiny, they still have work to do. They can mathematically secure the Premier League title while losing once in their remaining games. If Arsenal drop points, that will grant Man City more room for error.

What Arsenal needs to win Premier League title

In short, what Arsenal need to win the Premier League title is help. Plenty of it.

The Gunners no longer control their own destiny in the Premier League title race, as Man City lead in that regard with a higher maximum possible points total. Arsenal can finish with a maximum of 90 points, while Man City can end on 94 points should they win out.

Arsenal essentially have to win their final three matches and then pray that Man City drop at least five points along the way. Given City's current form, it certainly feels unlikely that will happen.

Arsenal, Man City remaining fixtures

While Arsenal have just three Premier League fixtures remaining in the season, Man City have four, meaning they still have a game in hand.

However, City will also have their attention split across the Champions League (semifinals) and FA Cup (final), meaning they have more competitions and games to navigate as the season steams towards its close.

And Arsenal don't have the easiest list of remaining games, with a tough match against Brighton among their challenges on the docket. The Gunners finish the year at home, while City conclude the league season on the road.

Odds to win Premier League 2023

Defending champions Manchester City are the overwhelming favourites to win their third straight Premier League title.

At this point, according to the sportsbooks it would prove a massive upset if Arsenal were somehow able to get back into the race. Their odds shortened, however, after an impressive 2-0 win at third-placed Newcastle United on May 7.
