South Africa international Bongani Zungu looks set to extend his contract with French Ligue 1 side Amiens SC.

This comes after Amiens confirmed that they are currently locked in negotiations with the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder in an attempt to retain his services for the foreseeable future.

"Amiens SC wishes to express its full support to Bongani Zungu, victim this Sunday against Saint-Etienne of a serious sprained knee with involvement of the anterior cruciate ligament. He will be unavailable for several months," reads a statement on Amiens SC's website.

According to the statement released by the club, the French Ligue1 outfit negotiations between the two parties are already underway over a new deal.

“The club wishes to express its confidence in Bongani, and is currently negotiating an extension of (the) contract with him,” added the club on its website.

The 25-year-old Bafana Bafana midfielder has been a key player for Amiens since making his move from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes last year.

Zungu's massive contribution for Amiens helped the side avoid relegation to the French Ligue 2 division, and has been praised for providing steel in their midfield.

Moreover, the Duduza-born player is out of Stuart Baxter's Bafana squad that is set to face Libya in a crucial 2019 Caf African Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday due to injury.

Reports suggest the ex-University of Pretoria player could return to action in 2019, although nothing has been confirmed as he's set to see a specialist in the next few days.
