Aston Villa edged out Leeds United 1-0 in Brisbane, Australia on Sunday as part of the Queensland Champions Cup.

Steven Gerrard named a strong starting side and Villa looked dangerous from the start with Philippe Coutinho quickly catching the eye.

The Brazilian would win a penalty but had his attempt and follow-up saved in the 24th minute by Leeds goalkeeper IIIan Meslier.

Both sides made plenty of changes at half-time and one of those would prove the match winner as Danny Ings made no mistake from the spot after earning Villa a penalty for handball.

Leeds struggled to find a reply and were dealt a cruel blow late on with youngster Archie Gray stretchered from the field after a heavy challenge.

Villa will now face Brisbane Roar on Wednesday night, while Leeds tackle Crystal Palace in Perth on Friday.

Ings looks poised for a better second season at Villa

Despite only playing the second half, Ings proved to be the match winner against Leeds and looked like someone with a point to prove.

After only scoring seven goals in his first season with Villa, the 29-year-old knows he’ll need to produce more for the club if he is to play regularly this campaign.

This match against Leeds suggests Ings is still capable of delivering regularly in the final third.

With one goal ruled out for offside, the English striker would go on to convert an excellent penalty and continued to harass the Leeds defence.

If Ings can reproduce his Southampton heroics from the 2019-20 season, Villa would be a team capable of causing most teams headaches this season in the Premier League.
