Valencia defeated 10-man Young Boys 3-1 in Wednesday's Uefa Champions League outing, with Roger Assale on target while his compatriot Sekou Sanogo's showing did little to help them in at Estadio Mestalla.

14 minutes into the game, Santi Mina gave the hosts a comfortable start but Marcelino Garcia's side were drawn level courtesy Assale.

The striker, 23, finished off a smart breakaway in the 37th minute, converting Christian Fassnacht's cut back past Neto.

Young Boys, however, went into the break behind after Mina completed his brace with few minutes before the half-time whistle was blown.

After the restart, tormentor-in-chief Carlos Soler then put the game beyond their Swiss visitors before midfielder Sanogo was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Francis Coquelin, thus, blowing their chances of making a comeback in the game.

The result has put Gerardo Seoane's side on the brink of elimination from this year's competition as they have recorded just a poinrt from four games and are sat at the bottom of Group H.

The goal was Assale's maiden effort in the elite European club competition, having hit four in the Europa League, all coming during last season. Overall, he has registered five efforts across all competition in the ongoing 2018-19 campaign.

Young Boys, the Swiss Super League table-toppers, switch attention to league action as they take on St. Gallen on Sunday.
