Ajax vs. Tottenham results: Spurs pull off miracle win in final seconds of Champions League semifinal image

Tottenham might have entered Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal match against Ajax with less confidence had it not witnessed what its fellow Premier League competitor Liverpool did to Barcelona the day prior in the other semifinal.

Yes, Tottenham entered the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Ajax down 0-1 on aggregate, and yes, the Spurs entered the match having lost nine of their last 14 games, winning only four and nearly losing their spot among Europe’s elite next season. But, then again, Liverpool needed a clean, 4-0 victory to reach the Champions League final, and it did just that; no reason Tottenham could not join the comeback party from a lesser deficit.

Sure enough, not only did Tottenham defeat Ajax to form an all-England Champions League final, but the Spurs did so in a fashion that was somehow more dramatic than Liverpool's comeback against Barcelona. Just past the suggested five minutes of extra time, Lucas Moura scored his third goal of the match to send the Spurs through on aggregate, 3-3 with three away goals to Ajax's one.

With the win, Tottenham reached the Champions League final for the first time in club history. The Spurs became only the second team in Champions League history to lose the first leg of the semifinal at home and progress to the final — the other was Ajax in 1995-96 against Panathinaikos.

The 2019 Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool (June 1 in Madrid) will be only the third major European final in history to feature two English teams, after the 1972 UEFA Cup final (Spurs vs. Wolves) and 2008 Champions League final (Manchester United vs. Chelsea).

Sporting News tracked the match with minute-by-minute updates. Here is how Tottenham stunned Ajax in the final seconds of the Champions League semifinal.
