In a surprising announcement, former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has officially retired from football at just 31.
The French center-back, who was set to play for Serie A side Como, shared the emotional news on September 25, citing injuries as a key factor in his decision.
Varane, who had an illustrious career with some of Europe’s top clubs, revealed his retirement in a heartfelt Instagram post.

A farewell to the beautiful game by Raphael Varane
He expressed gratitude for his career while acknowledging the toll injuries had taken on his body. “All good things must come to an end,” Varane wrote. “I’ve taken on many challenges, faced the impossible, and risen time after time. But now, it’s time to hang up my boots.”
The defender, who was struggling with a knee injury, had not played for Como since a Coppa Italia match.
Despite being contracted until 2026, the constant battle with fitness issues ultimately led him to make this tough decision. “I have no regrets; I wouldn’t change a thing,” Varane added. “I’ve won more than I could have ever dreamed, but it’s time to move on.”
During his career, Varane built a trophy cabinet most players could only dream of. He won 18 major trophies with Real Madrid, including four Champions League titles, and added to that with silverware at Manchester United. On the international stage, his crowning achievement came with France’s World Cup triumph in 2018.
Despite his exit from the pitch, Varane promised fans that his journey with Como wasn’t over. “I will remain with the club, just without my boots,” he said, hinting at a future role off the field.
As he steps away from the game, Varane leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. “Thank you, football. With love, Rapha,” he concluded, bidding an emotional goodbye to the sport he devoted his life to.
Como are set to play a home match against Verona on Sunday, which might serve as the defender's last chance to say goodbye to the fans in person.
