Manchester United might have made a clever decision when they included a sell-on clause in Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille.
The former United forward, now 22, has been making waves in Ligue 1, proving that the Red Devils' foresight could pay off big time.
After a turbulent period at Old Trafford, Greenwood was sold to Marseille for £26.5 million ($34.8m) in the summer. The decision to part ways came after Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 and faced serious charges, including attempted rape and assault.
He denied all accusations, and the charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their involvement. Despite this, United conducted their own investigation and decided it was best for both parties to move on.

Greenwood shines in France
Since his move to Marseille, Greenwood has hit the ground running. In just three Ligue 1 appearances, he has already scored five goals, including a brace in a recent win over Toulouse. His impressive form has validated United's decision to include a significant sell-on clause in his deal with the French club.
The clause reportedly valued between 40 and 50 percent, means that if Marseille decides to sell Greenwood in the future, United could earn a substantial portion of the profit. With his current trajectory, it seems likely that this clause could be activated sooner rather than later.
Before joining Marseille, Greenwood was also linked with European giants like Barcelona and Juventus. However, the French side won the race, and if Greenwood continues to shine, United’s hidden clause could turn out to be a masterstroke
