Manchester United’s tough start to the season has sparked criticism, and former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has aimed a sharp jab at the players, accusing them of “hiding” behind manager Erik ten Hag.
Despite recent signs of recovery, Petit believes the players need to take more responsibility on the pitch.
United’s season hit a rough patch with back-to-back losses to Brighton and Liverpool, leaving fans frustrated and piling pressure on Ten Hag.
But with a recent 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, the Red Devils seem to be turning the corner. However, Petit isn’t buying into the brief success just yet.

Petit: 'Players are hiding behind the manager'
In an interview with BetMGM, Petit pulled no punches. “I don’t agree with all of the criticism around Erik ten Hag. I actually look at the players and think they are hiding behind him. I don’t like it,” he said.
“These are players with real pedigree, and they hide behind him instead of fronting up and doing a job for the team.”
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, United have gone through a carousel of managers, hoping to reignite the glory days.
While acknowledging the difficulty in constant managerial changes, Petit believes it’s time for the players to step up. “It’s such a pity to see the club in the state it’s in,” Petit added. “The Premier League needs Manchester United back at its best, and it starts with the players.”
United will be hoping to carry their newfound momentum into their next game at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
