Canadian Denis Shapovalov won his first ever main-draw U.S. Open match on Monday by taking out Russian Daniil Medvedev, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, before a packed crowd on Court 7.

Shapovalov, who advanced to the main draw by winning three qualifying matches last week, next faces No. 8 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Marius Copil of Romania, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Against Medvedev, Shapovalov converted on  seven of 12 break chances. Here's how the match unfolded.

3:18 p.m. - Shapovalov walks on Court 7 wearing a purple/blue/gray shirt and gray shorts and gets a smattering of applause. Stands are packed as fans are excited to see the young Canadian in action.

3:30 p.m. - Shapovalov holds serve for a 1-0 lead.

3:37 p.m. - On serve 2-1 Shapovalov up. The two guys are trading some heavy groundstrokes with a few loose errors. Stands are packed.

3:40 p.m. - Shapovalov gets the first break on a double-fault and now leads 3-1.

 

 

3:43 p.m. - Then gives the break right back by hitting a forehand into the net on break point. Medvedev about to serve at 2-3.

3:49 p.m. - Shapovalov holds at love for a 4-3 lead. Pumps his fist to the crowd.

3:55 p.m. - Shapovalov holds for a 5-4 lead.

4:01 p.m. - Shapovalov holds again at love and leads 6-5.

4:03 p.m. - Shapovalov breaks at love with a forehand volley winner into the open court and seizes the first set 7-5.

4:11 p.m. -- Everything going his way now as he breaks early in the second set for a 2-0 lead.

4:17 p.m. -- Rolling now up a set and a break, 7-5, 3-0.

4:25 p.m. - Medvedev has all but thrown in the towel and Shapovalov is rolling, leading 7-5, 5-0.

4:35 p.m. - Shapovalov holds for a two-sets-to-love lead, 7-5, 6-1. Only a matter of time now as he skips to his chair.

4:39 p.m. - Medvedev hits  a forehand volley into the net on break point and now trails 0-1 in the third.

4:46 p.m. - Medvedev breaks and holds for a 2-1 lead in the third.

4:50 p.m. - Shapovalov holds and breaks himself for a 3-2 lead in the third.

4:59 p.m: Shapovalov breaks for 5-2 when Medvedev dumps a forhand volley into the net and will now serve for the match and a second-round date with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

5:03 p.m. -- Shapovalov holds and wins 7-5, 6-1, 6-2.
