Louisville is cleaning house.
Louisville on Wednesday announced it has placed men's basketball coach Rick Pitino on unpaid leave and athletics director Tom Jurich on paid administrative leave a day after the university admitted its basketball program is a part of federal investigation into a basketball recruiting scandal that led to the arrest of assistants at Auburn, Oklahoma State, Arizona and USC as well as a high-ranking Adidas executive and five others.
Earlier reports stated both Pitino and Jurich had been fired after indictments from the Justice Department alleged at least one Louisville assistant approached the sneaker and apparel company to pay a 2017 prospect to sign with the Adidas-sponsored school.

While Pitino has been placed on administrative leave, he is still "effectively fired," according to his attorney Steve Pence (via the Louisville Courier-Journal).
According to the Courier-Journal, "Pitino may have been put on administrative leave because under his contract, if he is fired he must be given 10 days' prior notice and 'an opportunity to be heard.'"
Jurich has been the Cardinals' AD for two decades, a span during which he brought in Pitino, who'd led Kentucky to national title, in 2001. Eventually, he'd guide Louisville to its third NCAA championship in 2013. Jurich was also responsible for Louisville's move from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference three years ago. Jurich's association with Adidas runs much deeper than the $160 million licensing deal Louisville secured with the three stripes. His daughter is a brand manager for the company.
Pitino is no stranger to success or scandal.
The 65-year-old, who has guided seven teams to the Final Four, admitted to having sexual relations with a former Louisville equipment manager in 2009. Charges were never filed after Andre McGee, a former assistant under Pitino, was cited as having hired strippers to entertain recruits several times from 2010-15, as outlined in a book written by a former escort. He leaves Louisville with a 770-269 overall record.
