Larry Nassar stabbing updates
The AP's sources indicated Nassar was in stable condition on Monday, but did not indicate where he had been transferred to receive medical care.
Additional reporting by ESPN, citing a statement from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, indicated Nassar was transported to a nearby hospital to undergo treatment. Below is the FBR's statement, via ESPN:
"We can confirm on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at approximately 2:35 p.m. (ET), an inmate was assaulted at the United States Penitentiary (USP) Coleman II, in Sumterville, Fla. Responding staff immediately initiated life-saving measures.
"Staff requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and life-saving efforts continued. The inmate was transported by EMS to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation."
NBC News reported additional details of Nassar's assault, citing information from Joe Rojas, president of Local 506 — a Florida-based union that represents employees at USP. Per Rojas, Nassar was stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest, suffering a collapsed lung.
According to an AP report on Wednesday, 49-year-old Shane McMillan is the inmate suspected of attacking Nassar. He reportedly stabbed him multiple times in his cell with a makeshift weapon before four other inmates pulled him off the disgraced doctor.
McMillan told prison workers that Nassar made a lewd comment while watching the Wimbledon tennis tournament, prompting him to attack. Nassar reportedly said he wanted to see girls playing in the women’s match.

Nassar was among the most named individuals in Team USA's 2015 sex abuse scandal in which more than 368 individuals alleged they were sexually assaulted by coaches, gym owners, working staff and doctors over the course of two decades beginning in the early 1990s.
More than 100 women sought $1 billion from the federal government for the FBI's failure to stop Nassar, even after allegations against him came to light in 2015. He wasn't arrested until 2016 — a year after allegations came to light — by Michigan State University police.
Michigan State agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 victims who were assaulted by him. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also paid $380 million in a settlement.
Larry Nassar prison sentence
Nassar, 59, is serving what is essentially a life sentence in federal prison after he pleaded guilty in 2017 to possession of child pornography and tampering with evidence.
He received additional sentences of 40-175 years and 40-125 years in Michigan State prison after pleading guilty to several counts of sexual assault in 2018, which he would serve concurrently. However, he would not be able to serve those terms until after his federal prison sentence, when he is 104 years old.
