Which Canada swimmers have the best chances to medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games?

Penny Oleksiak, Kylie Masse, Hilary Caldwell and Taylor Ruck are favoured to medal, with several others in the mix.

Penny Oleksiak

At just 17 years old, Oleksiak has already achieved global glory, becoming the youngest and most decorated Olympian in Canadian history at the 2018 Games in Rio. Oleksiak claimed gold in the 100-metre freestyle, her signature event, which she'll be competing in at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Oleksiak won four medals in Rio, also taking silver in the 100-metre butterfly, and bronze medals in two relays, the 4x100 and 4x200 metre races.

Taylor Ruck

Ruck has already made a big splash at the 2018 Commonwealth Games claiming gold in the 200-metre freestyle event, setting a Commonwealth Games record in the process. The 17-year-old was also part of the Canadian 4x100 metre relay team that claimed silver behind a record-setting Australian finish.

Kylie Masse

One of Canada's fastest-rising stars, Masse, whose ascent took place over the past calendar year, now figures to be a favourite to end up on the medal podium in Oz. After trying for bronze in the 100-metre backstroke at the 2016 Olympics, she won the world championship in that event in 2017 and also set a new Canadian record.

Hilary Caldwell

The veteran among a group of young, Canadian swimmers, Caldwell, at 27-years-old, has taken on the role of mentor among the green swim team. She's very accomplished in her own right, the previous Canadian record-holder in the short course 200-metre backstroke, until Ruck produced a faster time in 2017. Masse also upset Caldwell in the same event at the Canadian trials a year ago, touching the wall 0.06 seconds ahead of her countrywoman. Masse then subsequently took down Caldwell's long-course record in July. Caldwell claimed bronze in that 200-metre backstroke event in Rio in 2016.
