Bouchard and McHale battled to a tiebreak in the first set, with the Canadian eventually claiming the set. The 23-year-old then went on to dominate the second set, winning without dropping a single game.

The first-round match was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, but was postponed due to heavy rainfall in the area. Bouchard will face Andrea Petkovic of Germany on Thursday.
