The 17-year-old made waves in her first match at the Washington, D.C. tournament when she became the youngest Canadian to win a WTA main draw match in nearly 30 years. Andreescu followed that up with a straight-sets victory over Mladenovic, who was the second seed at the competition.

It marked the first time a player born in the year 2000 or later had defeated a top-20 opponent. Andreescu is currently ranked 167th in the world, with Mladenovic occupying the No. 17 spot.

In addition to her impressive performance in the women's singles draw, Andreescu found a bit of success in doubles play. Andreescu and partner Louisa Chirico won Tuesday's Round of 16 match, although they fell at the quarterfinal stage to Jocelyn Rae and Jessica Moore late Thursday night.
