Austin Connelly has experienced what it was like to be in contention for one of golf’s most prestigious titles. Now, he doesn’t want to let that feeling slip away.

Connelly has decided to stay in Europe so he could participate in the Porsche European Open, declining an invitation to the Canadian Open, which begins July 27. Instead Connelly will stay in Europe in an attempt to lock up a spot on the 2018 European tour.

Connelly made his Tour debut in Feb. 2017. He’s found a pair of top-10 finishes and the Canadian event, which begins Thursday, wouldn't affect his standing for a tour spot.

At Royal Birkdale, Connelly made his first Grand Slam appearence. Connelly finished the event in 14th place.

The allure of a hometown Canadian crowd, especially coming off a strong showing at the British Open, was almost enough ot bring Connelly back accross the pond.

“Honestly they are the best fans in the world,” Connolly told The Canadian Press. “It doesn't matter where I am. I've got so much support in Nova Scotia and just so many close family members and friends. They've supported me so much over the years. It's nice to represent them and try to make them proud."

The Porsche European Open is scheduled to begin July 26 and continue through July 30.
