USA vs. Canada final score, results: US downs Canada in Olympics for first time since 2010 image

It took over a decade, but Team USA finally has another win over Canada in the Olympics after rolling to a 4-2 victory in the preliminary round Friday night.

The last American victory was in the 2010 preliminary round in Vancouver. Canada avenged that loss with a 3-2 overtime victory in the gold-medal game.

Goals came quickly for both sides in this game — 1:10 apart early in the first period, in fact, to make the score 1-1. The U.S. scored the next two goals in quick succession.

The Americans took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Ben Meyers that was set up by Jake Sanderson, who missed the team's first game in the tournament because of COVID protocols. The goal came with a minute left in the first period. The USA scored again three minutes into the second period.

Canada opened the game with a strong and heavy forecheck that led to early chances, but in conceding those two first-period goals they showed they lacked the speed to keep up with Team USA, whose average age is around 25.

The third American goal was indicative of Canada's woes. Goalie Eddie Pasquale coughed up the puck behind the net and couldn't get back in goal in time

Canada scored short-handed in the second period to make it a 3-2 game and had moments of dictating the pace and playing their style, but they didn't cash in a single power play and had few quality looks.

Strauss Mann bailed out Team USA in net on more than one occasion, including on a brief two-man advantage for Canada in the third period. The team's forward depth stepped up as well, with four different players scoring the USA's goals.

The win puts Team USA atop the Group A standings at 2-0. It will take on Germany on Sunday to close out group play. Canada will take on China in its final preliminary game at the same time.

USA vs. Canada live updates, highlights from 2022 Olympics

Final: USA 4, Canada 2

1:22 a.m.: And that'll do it. The late-game push wasn't enough and Team USA defeats Canada in the Olympics for the second time in 10 tries and the first time in over a decade.

1:20 a.m.: Canada pulls its goalie with just over two minutes left. The extra skater comes on as it tries to get back in this game.

1:18 a.m.: With 2:23 left, Canada hits the post for the fourth time in the game. Time is ticking and this one seems more and more out of reach.

1:18 a.m.: Strauss Mann has been key for the USA on this penalty kill. He's faced some good looks and come up clutch as the defense hasn't helped much. He stopped seven shots between the two power plays.

1:13 a.m.: Canada gets a 5-on-3 advantage for the next 40 seconds as Steven Kampfer gets called for high-sticking. A few flurries in front of the net for Canada so far but no seriously threats. Now 4:37 left in the game.

1:11 a.m.: Canada goes on the power play with 6:06 left in regulation.

1:10 a.m.: Just under seven minutes left as Canada is looking for some late life but can't capitalize behind and in front of the net as they're just throwing pucks at the net now.

1:04 a.m.: Officially halfway through the third and final period. Some close chances for both sides since the Agostino goal but neither team really pressuring on the forecheck to the extent they were or stepping into passing lanes.

12:58 a.m.: GOAL, USA. With 13:47 left, Kenny Agostino fires a shot from well outside the faceoff circle that goes through Pasquale. USA 4, Canada 2 as Team USA continues to turn defense into offense. Andy Miele forced the turnover.

12:55 a.m.: Down to 15:32 left in the final period. A pretty balanced first five minutes. Good speed from Canada early, carrying over from the end of the second period.

12:52 a.m.: Nothing going for Team USA on the power play tonight. Pretty lifeless effort as the only real chance was Meyers passing up a shot in front of the net and then having his pass intercepted.

12:49 a.m.: Team USA now on the power play for the second time tonight. Couldn't cash in the first time.

12:47 a.m.: The third period is underway. The U.S. will look to kill off the remaining 10 seconds of the Canada power play. Eric Staal gets called for slashing, so it's 4-on-4 for 10 seconds and then Team USA goes on the power play.

End second period: USA 3, Canada 2

12:31 a.m.: Max Noreau fakes a pass and then shoots it through several defenders but it just hits off the crossbar and bounces out of the goal. Tough break for Team Canada to end the period. Still time left on the powerplay for Canada to start the third.

12:29 a.m.: With 1:43 left in the second, Canada goes on the powerplay trying to tie it up after Team USA gets hit for charging.

12:26 a.m.: Canada not letting up and has definitely picked up the pace following the goal. Controlling the puck here for much of the last few minutes, especially along the boards. Very few turnovers and the ones they've had haven't been costly.

12:23 a.m.: GOAL CANADA. Corban Knight intercepts a pass in the defensive zone and leads the 2-on-1 shorthanded rush as he buries it home easily. Costly give away by Matty Beniers there to set up the odd-an rush. USA 3, Canada 2 with just over 5 minutes left.

12:18 a.m.: First penalty of the game upcoming. The US heads on the powerplay as Eric Staal is called for elbowing. Could be a prime chance for Team USA to extend its lead with 7:20 left in the second.

12:12 a.m.: A little pushing and shoving after a shot on goal by Canada that Mann handles easily, but not a full blown fight. Canada's quality chances have been few and far between, though two have hit off the crossbar and goalpost.

12:09 a.m.: US is playing with blazing speed right now and Canada just seems all out of sorts. From puck movement to getting into passing lanes to the forecheck, it's been speed first here for Team USA in the second.

12:03 a.m.: GOAL USA. Brendan Brisson goes backhand top shelf on a pass from behind the net that Pasquale couldn't get back in net quick enough to fully recover from. Really strong forecheck there from the US to force a bad pass from Pasquale and the US intercepts it easily. USA 3, Canada 1 with with just about 17 minutes left in period 2.

Midnight: Mason McTavish's shot goes high off the crossbar on the 2-on-1 scoring chance for Canada less than a minute in.

11:59 p.m.: The second period is underway.

End first period: USA 2, Canada 1

11:41 p.m.: GOAL USA.  Jake Sanderson leads the rush as Ben Meyers buries it home with just over a minute left to give the US the lead. USA 2, Canada 1 as the USA takes the lead late.

11:36 p.m.: What a sequence for Eddie Pasquale and Canada. He sprawls out to save a rocket on the stick side pad to end a furious rally from Team USA that had several shots and rebounds. Best looks of the night since the goal for Team USA.

11:30 p.m.: Through 12 minutes, Canada's possessed the puck more and chances, albeit some strong ones and some weak ones. The Americans are definitely playing faster and utilizing their speed a bit more to compensate for lack of possession.

11:28 p.m.: And just like that Canada with a point-blank chance right in the crease in front of the net but can't cash in. Not the first time that's happened for Canada tonight.

11:26 p.m.: Just over 10 minutes left in the first period. Not much by the way of legit scoring chances since the two goals early. No penalties yet for either side and no killer turnovers either.

11:18 p.m.: Canada with a heavy forecheck early as they're the aggressors and certainly the more physical of the two teams early here with just about five minutes gone.

11:15 p.m.: GOAL USA. At the 17:24 mark, Andy Miele with a nice a deke and just goes top shelf as he skates down the ice and finds the back of the net. Goals in quick succession here. USA 1, Canada 1 with just under three minutes gone.

11:12 p.m.: GOAL CANADA. Just over a minute into the game and Canada strikes first on a lucky shot that was fired in from the side boards that USA netminder Strauss Mann couldn't corral. Mat Robinson with the goal to make it Canada 1, USA 0 with 18:24 left.

11:10 p.m.: The puck is down and Canada wins the opening faceoff.

11:01 p.m.: And here's the lineup for Team Canada. Notably, four out of the five goals for Canada last time out came from third or fourth liners and all five goals were by different players.

10:58 p.m.: Still about 10 minutes out from puck drop, but here's the starting lineup for Team USA this time out. Sean Farrell, who had a hat trick last time out, is the third line right wing.
