The United States walked away from the pool with four more medals on Monday, but gold was unattainable for the Americans.
While the U.S. got off to a hot start by winning silver and bronze in the women's 400m IM, it was Canada phenom Summer McIntosh who reached the pinnacle and won by a wide margin for the first Olympic gold medal of her career.
The most enthralling finish came in the men's 200m freestyle, where Romania's David Popovici outlasted Great Britain's Matthew Richards by two one-hundredths of a second. USA's Luke Hobson narrowly won bronze in the race, while Olympic veteran Ryan Murphy found his way back to the podium with bronze in the 100m backstroke.
South Africa's Tatjana Smith and Italy's Thomas Ceccon also won gold, Ceccon's first-ever Olympic gold medal, before the final event of the day was dominated by a 1-2 Australian punch. Mollie O'Callaghan beat out Ariarne Titmus in the women's 200m freestyle, with O'Callaghan preventing Titmus from earning a second gold medal at these Olympics.
On the U.S. side, the disappointment of the day was Lilly King's near-miss in the 100m breaststroke. She struggled to recover from a tough start and finished just one-hundredth of a second off of Mona McSharry's bronze medal time.
