Looking to defend her gold medal in the 2022 Winter Games, Chloe Kim has put herself in a position to repeat. Making her second Olympic appearance, the 21-year-old dropped into the halfpipe for the women's qualifying event late Tuesday night.

And she soared.

Kim finished with the best run of the day amongst 22 participants, scoring a 87.75 on the first of her two runs and snagged the top spot in the final. She did fall in her second run, but only the top score of the two runs is recorded.

The top-12 advanced, which included veteran Chinese snowboarder Liu Jiayu and Cai Xuetong, as well as Japan’s Mitsuki Ono, who finished second behind Kim.

Kim is the only American to advance to the finals, but Canada's Elizabeth Hosking and Brooke Dhondt are among the final 12 competitors.

Kim's quest for gold almost never happened after she pondered retirement prior to the Beijing Olympics after suffering from burnout. She took time off, going to school at Princeton and didn't strap in to a snowboard for 22 months.

That reflection and revitalization was noticeable.

"I was really nervous in my first run-- because we're at the Olympics," Kim said. "I feel like I'm in such a better place mentally and physically. I'm so grateful to be out here representing the U.S. I'm just enjoying the moment. I don't know how many more Games I'm going to do, so I'm embracing the experience as much as possible."

Here's what you need to know about watching Kim in the 2022 Winter Olympics, along with a TV schedule for her events.
