With the group stage coming to a close, Sunday's men's ice hockey matchup between Canada and China is especially pivotal.
The first-place finisher in each of the three groups and the best second-place team will advance automatically to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Winter Olympics tournament.

That's where Canada comes in. It won its opening game 5-1 against Germany, but after a 4-2 loss to Team USA, it fell to second place in Group A with three points.
This means it will need to beat China to be in contention for the fourth AQ spot — but the Canadians don't control their destiny.
Denmark is second in Group B with six points and Sweden is tied for first with six points, meaning Canada will be watching those teams closely.

China has yet to win a game as the host team. It will compete in a qualification playoff with the other teams that fail to advance directly to the quarterfinals.
The Chinese rebounded from an 8-0 loss to Team USA in its opener to lose 3-2 to reigning silver medalist Germany in its second game.
