Editors Note: The IIHF on Wednesday canceled the remainder of the 2022 World Juniors tournament, citing the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant. The announcement was made with preliminary games already in progress after a player on the Russian National Team tested positive for COVID-19. The positive test forced a third forfeited game in just two days compromising the sportive integrity of the event.
The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship begins Boxing Day, per tradition, and all eyes will be on the Canadians once again.
Serving as the host country, Canada is looking to reclaim the top spot after losing to the United States in the 2021 edition's gold-medal game.
Canada leads the way with 18 gold medals at world juniors, the latest coming in 2020; however, it has been a while since the country won on home soil. The last time was back in 2015 when a guy named Connor McDavid was on the squad. He now twirls around the rink in Edmonton, where Canada will look to have similar success as the Oilers have this season.
At the helm, this year is former Senators bench boss Dave Cameron. The Ottawa 67's coach takes over for André Tourigny, who left Hockey Canada to coach the Coyotes. Cameron also took Tourigny's gig with the 67's. As usual, Canada's roster is loaded with top NHL prospects, including Owen Power, the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick. In fact, Team Canada also includes Shane Wright, the likely No. 1 pick in 2022, and Connor Bedard, the likely No. 1 pick in 2023.
Bedard is only the eighth 16-year-old ever to make Team Canada, a list that includes the likes of McDavid and Wayne Gretzky.
Here's everything to know about the tournament, including how to watch live games in Canada and a complete schedule with updated scores and standings.
