Saturday night means 'Hockey Night in Canada,' but the broadcast looks a little different this weekend.
After Don Cherry's firing dominated headlines earlier this week, Nov. 16 will mark the first time the former 'Coach's Corner' co-host won't appear on HNIC in nearly four decades.
The show goes on, though and there are plenty of games to play.
HOCKEY HALL OF FAME: BROWN | CARBONNEAU | HUGHSON | WICKENHEISER | YORK | ZUBOV
The Senators, Canadiens, Maple Leafs and Canucks are the four Canadian teams in action at the tail end of one of two days on the league's schedule this season that features fifteen games. Here is a look at what to expect on HNIC.
Who plays on Hockey Night in Canada tonight?
- Ottawa Senators vs. Buffalo Sabres
- Puck drop: 7 p.m. ET
The Senators are in the midst of their best stretch of games so far this season (4-2-0 in last six) and the Sabres have suddenly plummeted out of the Atlantic Division playoff picture during a six-game losing streak. If the Senators are actually trending upward, this is a must-win game against a slumping opponent. Meanwhile, Buffalo will hope to stop a frustrating freefall that has plagued them in the first half of the month.
- New Jersey Devils vs. Montreal Canadiens
- Puck drop: 7 p.m. ET
The Habs increasingly look like a real playoff team this year, built on Jonathan Drouin's strong start to the season and an equally capable supporting cast forming around him. Claude Julien's team hosts the lowly New Jersey Devils, still struggling to rise from a brutal start.
- Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
- Puck drop: 7 p.m. ET
The Penguins will miss Sidney Crosby for the next six weeks due to injury; the Leafs are playing sans Mitch Marner. What will these two teams do without their superstars? Toronto can afford to lean on its other superstars a bit more for the time being, but Pittsburgh also has Kris Letang and Patric Hornqvist out.
Both teams find themselves on the outskirts of the Eastern Conference playoff picture at the moment — this game isn't as important as a divisional matchup, per se, but both teams would feel more comfortable with those two points available on Saturday in their back pocket.
- Colorado Avalanche vs. Vancouver Canucks
- Puck drop: 10 p.m. ET
HNIC's last matchup of the night sees two nearly equal teams go toe-to-toe. Through Nov. 14, the Avs (24 points) and Canucks (23) are separated by just one point, own similar goal differentials (Colorado +13, Vancouver +11) and have played close to 50/50 hockey in each of their last 10 games.
Each of these teams features a top rookie defenseman in Colorado's Cale Makar (18 points in 19 games) and Vancouver's Quinn Hughes (12 points in 19 games). They both have players within the league's top-10 scorers so far this season, too. Will Nathan MacKinnon muscle his way to victory against the Canucks? Or will Elias Petersson produce another highlight-reel goal?
What channel is Hockey Night in Canada on?
- TV channel: CBC (TOR vs. PIT, COL vs. VAN), CityTV/SN (NJ vs. MTL, COL vs. VAN) and SN1 (COL vs. VAN)
CBC has been the home of Hockey Night in Canada since its television inception in 1952.
With Rogers Communications becoming the primary Canadian rightsholders for the NHL in 2014, CBC has been joined by Rogers-owned Sportsnet and CityTV as broadcast networks for HNIC games.
Longtime host Ron MacLean is joined by David Amber and play-by-play announcers Jim Hughson, Dave Randorf and Paul Romanuk.
