After dominating Group B to open up its campaign at the 2024 World Juniors, Team USA is on to its next challenge.
The Americans will play Latvia, the fourth-place team out of Group A, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday morning.
Team USA capped off an undefeated preliminary round with a 10-2 drubbing of Slovakia on Sunday. Michigan standout Rutger McGroarty netted a hat trick to pace the onslaught, breaking out on the heels of a slow start to the tournament. After overcoming an illness, Red Wings’ prospect Trey Augustine shined in between the pipes with 38 saves.
The Americans also secured wins over Norway and Switzerland in the preliminary round, as well as an overtime win over Czechia. Team USA relies on a high-powered offense, as it has a tournament-high 29 goals.
Latvia advanced to the quarterfinals despite a 1-3 record in the preliminary round. It finished with three points, tied with Germany, but a win over the Germans buoyed Latvia into the next round.
Team USA is 4-0 all-time against Latvia, including a 5-2 victory in the preliminary round last year. The Americans have out-scored Latvia, 35-6, all-time.
