It was not a good night for Scott Darling.
The Carolina Hurricanes goalie was in net for his team's 6-1 loss to the visiting New York Rangers on Wednesday night, and the five-goal loss was punctuated by a first-period blunder that will surely make all the lowlight reels for the next little while.
After giving up a goal to Chris Kreider in the opening minute of play, Darling's night went from bad to worse. Rangers center Mika Zibanejad flipped the puck into the Carolina zone from outside the blue line and turned toward the bench for a line change. As the puck floated toward Darling, the Hurricanes' goalie looked positioned to make a routine catch. But instead, he seemed to momentarily take his eyes off the puck, allowing it to sail past his glove and into the net.
It was likely the easiest non-empty net goal Zibanejad will ever score in his career.
Scott Darling. This is not good.

Zibanejad's tally made it 2-0 after just 2:26 of play, and the Rangers never looked back.
