This isn't the way the Pittsburgh Penguins wanted to start the new season after winning the Stanley Cup.
After losing their 2017-18 season opener, 5-4, in overtime to the Blues on Wednesday, the Penguins were thrashed 10-1 in Chicago on Thursday, with Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad scoring a hat trick to lead the way.
Saad, a Pittsburgh native, scored twice in a five-goal first period for the Blackhawks. His first came at 7:06 after a two-on-one resulted in a Richard Panik shot that Saad redirected into the Pittsburgh net.
He got his second of the game just over two minutes later, pouncing on a huge rebound to give his team a 4-0 lead.
With the game getting out of hand, Saad had to watch several of his teammates get in on the action before notching his third goal 5:21 into the final period. This time he was the beneficiary of a nifty Jonathan Toews pass.
Not a bad start for the 24-year-old's second stint in Chicago. Saad scored 24 times in the regular season for the Columbus Blue Jackets last season.
