Less than 24 hours after dominating Germany 16-2, Hockey Canada is back on the ice for Game 2 of its 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship campaign. But as coach Andre Tourigny knows: One game does not dictate a tournament, and his team needs to be ready.
"We can not get too excited about that one," he said after the win, noting the Germans faced a lot of adversity up to and through the game. "When you're trailing by six, seven, eight goals at some point you don't play the same way there's. So, I don't read to much into the final score. I read on how we played in the third period. ... We have a lot of adversity ahead of us and we cannot get ahead of ourselves with that game."
Tourigny knows he needs to keep his team level-headed because while Slovakia is not one of the "Big Five," it's not a team to take lightly. Slovakia beat Switzerland 1-0 on Christmas, will be rested and has a couple of top NHL prospects in Martin Chromiak (LAK) and Samuel Knazko (CBJ).
While they have a somewhat easy path to a top spot in the quarterfinals, the Canadians cannot take their foot off the gas. As Dawson Mercer put it after the win against Germany: "We got to keep on progressing and getting better day by day so we can be ready for when the medal rounds come."
