Injuries continued to pile up for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night in New Jersey.
Hours after it was announced that Ilya Mikheyev will miss months following surgery to repair his wrist that was sliced by a skate in the Leafs game against the New Jersey Devils, the team revealed Jake Muzzin will be out week-to-week with a broken foot.
Sportsnet reported that the injury occurred on a blocked shot from Devils defenseman P.K. Subban in the second period. Muzzin dropped to the ice but stayed in the game for the ensuing face-off. He then sailed the puck out of play and went to the box to serve the two-minute delay of game penalty where he was visibly uncomfortable.
Muzzin's blocked shot occurred just one minute and 27 seconds into the second period — but he played 18 more shifts in the game, finishing with almost 21 minutes of ice time; that was third-most for Toronto defensemen in the game. According to Sportsnet's Luke Fox, he walked out of Prudential Center without crutches and in dress shoes.
He now joins Trevor Moore (concussion), Andreas Johnsson (leg) and Mikheyev on the shelf. Martin Marincin took Muzzin's spot in the lineup and Adam Brooks makes his NHL debut on a line with Frederik Gauthier and Jason Spezza against the New York Rangers on Saturday in Mikheyev's spot.
