In addition to DeAngelo, Philadelphia received a 2022 seventh-round pick. Carolina got three draft picks in return. The Flyers subsequently signed DeAngelo to a two-year, $10 million contract.
DeAngelo was set to be a restricted free agent this summer, coming off a one-year "prove-it" deal with the Hurricanes. On the ice, he was impressive in an offensive role, leading all Carolina defensemen in points with 51 and finishing third on the team in assists with 41.
He certainly comes with controversy. During his time with the Rangers, DeAngelo got into a physical altercation with backup goaltender Alexander Georgiev. As a result, he was placed on waivers, spending the rest of the 2020-21 season with the Rangers taxi squad.
With the Flyers, he'll get the reins to quarterback the power play and play a similar role as he did with the Hurricanes. It's a good fit on the ice, just as long as his off-the-ice issues don't come up again.

Tony DeAngelo trade details
- Flyers receive: D Tony DeAngelo, 2022 seventh-round pick (No. 220 overall)
- Hurricanes receive: 2022 fourth-round pick (No. 101 overall), 2023 third-round pick, 2024 second-round pick
The Flyers have been adamant that they are not rebuilding, but rather retooling this offseason to compete by the fall. This move addresses a big need on the blue line, giving them an offensive-minded defensemen who can carry the puck up ice and contribute on the score sheet.
For the Hurricanes, they got quite the haul for a defenseman they weren't going to re-sign. Carolina doesn't have a ton of picks this year, or in the next couple of drafts, so adding more draft capital is key for GM Don Waddell.
Tony DeAngelo stats
DeAngelo is coming off his second-best season production-wise. He bounced back after playing in just six games during the 2020-21 season with an efficient campaign in Carolina.
